MUSICAL GUEST: Singer/Songwriter STEPHANIE SAMMONS

Listeners of “Midwest BEAT” know that sometimes host/producer Tom Lounges likes to introduce relatively unknown artists he has newly discovered to his NPR listening audience. Such is the case with tonight's guest, STEPHANIE SAMMONS, an artist that Lounges and others in the media predict to be one of the next rising stars in the Americana music market.

Sammons is not a "new" artist, but she IS new to NPR audiences. Despite having released two original music EPs prior to her latest full length album, "TIME & EVOLUTION," Sammons and her songs never really landed on the general public's radar.

That should all change with the release of "TIME & EVOLUTION" -- produced by MARY BRAGG -- an artist who herself broke HUGE in 2019 with her album, "Violets As Camouflage." Bragg became the Americana music darling of NPR stations coast to coast.

With Bragg's fingerprints all over Sammon's new 10-song collection, it's very likely the same kind of lightning will strike again, only this time for Texas-born and bred Sammons.

Working with Bragg in the studio and working in songwriter workshops with the likes of Suzy Boggus, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Jonatha Brooke, Gretchen Peters and others, has enabled Sammons to find "her voice" and "her path" in the music industry.

Armed here with a cache of powerful songs, backed by an incredible group of musicians, and discovering a unique chemistry with Bragg as a creative collaborator, Sammons has created one of the best albums of the year to date with "TIME & EVOLUTION."

Hey... I'm not in town this weekend...BUT... I did pre-record a killer new "NEEDLE DROP" radio show for broadcast this evening that will air from 6-9pm Central!

I listened and filled the play list with a lot of your requests. Tons of 1980s hard rocking faves by the bands who rocked our world back in the MTV-era. That said -- last night at the San Diego House of Blues -- I bumped into (literally) Sebastian Bach of Skid Row fame. He was performing there and Alice and I were going in for dinner with some friends of ours from the ALA conference we're attending.

Funny how rock 'n' roll somehow finds me everywhere and anywhere I go... :-)

Tune in tonight at AM-1420, 95.1FM or 106.7FM. Or if outside those listening areas -- stream live in real time online at -- www.wimsradio.com.

Hey dog and music lovers alike! I have created a special "Critter's Corner" at our store -- Tom Lounges Record Bin -- in downtown Hobart, Indiana.

All of the LPs and CDs shown in this photo on this special counter of stock is designated to help our animals.

The sales from these limited number of items are donated to the shelter. There are only so many copies of each item designation for this special promotion. These particular products will rotate and be replaced with occasional new titles and artists once these items get sold.

My personal THANK YOU to Paul & Cynthia Rodgers, J.J. Garcia, Mr. Zero of The Kings and a few others for making it possible for me to create this special sale section. Buy, buy, buy and help, help, help!

MUSICAL GUEST: SMOKEY ROBINSON

Tonight is one show NOT to miss! Tune in to hear an incredible interview with an internationally famous entertainer who is truly deserving of being labeled -- "a legend!"

The 84-year-old SMOKEY ROBINSON will talk candidly to "Midwest BEAT" host/producer Tom Lounges about his brand new studio album "GASMS", while also discussing some of the classic hit songs he has written for his own group The Miracles and many other top artists.

Robinson will talk about his remarkable 60-plus year career, including his role as a primary figure in the birth and success of Detroit's legendary Motown Records.

This is Tom's first interview with Smokey Robinson in over 15 years, and he will question what it was like being a black entertainer at the height of the Sixties Civil Rights scene, along with pulling out stories about folks like Michael Jackson, Berry Gordy, Jr. and others.

Q: Which hugely successful Motown that he brought to the label grew up just down the street from him as a child?

Q: Which Miracles song that was originally recorded by Robinson didn't become a major hit until young Michael Jackson made it so while with the Jackson Five?

Q: What can fans going to see Robinson perform on Friday, May 31st at the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana expect to see and hear at the concert?

The answers to those questions and others will be revealed while Tom spins some of Robinson's brand new songs, along with some classic Smokey tunes, and a few songs by other artists.

Keep up with Smokey at: www.SmokeyRobinson.com.

GUEST: WILL TURPIN -- Bassist/Co-Founder of COLLECTIVE SOUL

COLLECTIVE SOUL is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this summer with a large U.S. TOUR co-headlined by HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH, along with a new double album titled "HERE TO ETERNITY."

COLLECTIVE SOUL's co-founder and bassist WILL TURPIN joins me tonight on air to discuss the band's longevity, the release of their 12th studio album and first double album.

Atlanta's COLLECTIVE SOULl -- brothers Ed (lead vocalist) and Dean Roland (rhythm guitarist), Will Turpin (bassist), Johnny Rabb (drummer), and Jesse Triplett (lead guitarist) -- just released "Here to Eternity," recorded live on location at Elvis Presley’s estate in Palm Springs.

That makes COLLECTIVE SOUL the only music artist other than Elvis to ever record at the historical landmark where Elvis and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon following their Las Vegas wedding in 1967.
