—What originally sparked your deep passion for tea?—
—-Kiki—
“As an absolute beginner, I admit I was often frustrated by my own awkwardness and ignorance. Perhaps it was curiosity that kept me going. As I continued my studies, I began to control my body, my breath, and gain a better understanding of the aesthetic and design in the world of Chanoyu. When I hosted my first chaji and felt a deep sense of calm, that was when I experienced an awakening — a deep spark of passion to become a true practitioner of tea, not just not anthropologist or researcher.

: about KIKI :
Born in Chile to a Chilean father and an American mother, Kiki developed an interest in Japanese culture from a young age. While studying at the University of Hawaii, she discovered the world of tea, which became her main area of research. This led her to study abroad in Japan, where she met Danish tea master Bisgaard-sensei and began a deeper passion for the tea ceremony.

She continued her tea studies at the Urasenke Professional College of Chado, one of the most respected schools of Japanese tea ceremony. After graduating, Kiki spent four and a half years working at Marukyu Koyamaen, a family business producing matcha for over 300 years.

During her time in Kyoto, Kiki co-founded Totousha, a cultural hub located near Daitokuji Temple, where she and two fellow tea enthusiasts curated unique tea gatherings that blended traditional tea culture with the contemporary. These events integrated Noh theater, calligraphy, and even tea bars mixing matcha with alcohol, attracting significant media attention and helping to shape a modern vision of Japanese tea culture.

Now based in Hawaii, Kiki continues to share her passion for Japanese tea culture with the world, using her creativity and experience to connect people across cultures through the art of tea.

Thank you for waiting! Our shipment of hojicha powder has just arrived from Japan.
This special powder comes directly from a tea company in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, a region well known for its high-quality matcha production. After trying many different varieties, we found that this particular hojicha powder is truly exceptional for lattes. It has a rich, nutty depth of flavor with minimal bitterness, creating a wonderfully smooth and bold taste.
We highly recommend giving it a try—it’s one of our top picks, and we’re excited to share it with you!

Beyond Arita-yaki. That is their motto. This Arita-yaki pottery was founded in 1953. The factory, located on a small hill overlooking the countryside, has the only “tunnel kiln” in Arita-yaki, and has produced long-selling products such as “Hotarude” (Firefly’s lights), “Tebineri” (Hand-twisted), and “Platinum Peony”, which have remained in the 400-year history of Arita-yaki. They will pass on these techniques to the next generation and continue to make “particular” pottery that makes our daily life of quality. At Hanatabi, we carry their ceramic mimic fabric series. The comfort of having a cheekful of the finest flax (linen).
The texture of washed linen fluttering in the wind is captured on the vessels. This is a modern evolution of tebineri, a traditional technique handed down in the Bunzan kiln in Arita, Saga Prefecture.
The “ceramic mimic fabric,” which means “porcelain that imitates fabric,” was born over the 400-year history of Arita-yaki porcelain.

This delicate pattern on the white ceramic creates a textured look like real fabric, making this vase very unique and exceptionally beautiful.
With or without flowers,Something about it gives the place a gentle energy. We have four different sizes for you to choose from to accentuate your space.
Please come and see them at the store.
