The results of our study “Women in Piping and Drumming: Equality, Inclusivity, and Diversity” around the representation and inclusion of women in Scotland’s piping and drumming scene, have been published today. This survey was first launched in April 2023 and aimed to understand women's perspectives and experiences, to establish a baseline on what was currently happening in the community and gain insight into potential barriers for women taking part in piping and drumming in Scotland. You can read the full findings from our website at the link below.

The National Piping Centre has launched two new initiatives which aim to promote more equality, diversity and inclusion and take meaningful steps to help create a safer and more inclusive piping and drumming community for all. These two projects, The Maket Collective and The Stand Project, each seek to place equality for women firmly on the agenda across the piping world in Scotland and beyond.

The Maket Collective project launched in August this year, with the second new initiative launching today - The Stand Project. This allyship project aims to reach into community spaces to provide support and create dialogue around diversity in the piping and drumming community.

To join this project you can pledge to stand with all members of the piping and drumming community, stand up for everyone in the community, and stand against discrimination. To demonstrate this, you can wear a pin badge which will show their support for everyone having a place in the piping community. The Stand Project pin badges are free and available from The National Piping Centre.

EDITH MACPHERSONThe death at the age of 96 of pioneering lady piper Edith MacPherson has been announced. Edith passed away in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. A champion Highland dancer she was also a Champion Piper – in the days when women entering the male domain of competition was frowned on.
Indeed when Edith took the Piobaireachd at Invergordon Games in 1947 there was much shuffling of brogues and tut-tutting in the beer tent.

In those days ladies and girls were not allowed to play at Oban and Inverness, shocking though that seems to us now. The Equality Act of 1974, and pressure from campaigners such as Seumas MacNeill, changed all that thank goodness.
Now we have a situation where ladies are fulfilling roles at all levels of piping and pipe bands: judges, pipe majors, leading drummers, champion soloists. The only barrier to success is desire and ability.
Edith had piping in her family. Her great-great uncle was Alexander Ross piper to Sir Colin Campbell at Alma in the Crimean War. Edith had lessons from P/M John MacDonald, Inverness, and, mostly, P/M William Young, Cameron Highlanders (also an early tutor of Jimmy McIntosh). Edith won the top ceòl mòr prize at the National Mod in Glasgow when she was only 17 and was second in the Dunvegan Medal on three occasions.
