The first flight of the Boeing 747 took place on February 9, 1969. The 747 was certified in December of that year and it entered service with Pan Am on January 22, 1970. The 747 was the first airplane called a "Jumbo Jet" and the first wide-body airliner. Out of (1,574) 747's built, (44) passenger 747's remain in service today. The last 747 passenger version was delivered April 2005. The last 747 cargo version was delivered January 31, 2023.

On July 31, 1971: Apollo 15 became the first mission to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The Apollo 15 LRV was driven by astronauts David Scott and Jim Irwin.

The LRV was a lightweight, electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum of the Moon. The LRV was developed in only 17 months and performed all its functions on the Moon with no major anomalies. The rover could travel at almost 10 mph (15 kph) and had a range of about 55 miles (89 kilometers) according to SpaceCenter.org

July 20, 1969: Apollo 11, astronaut Neil Armstrong plants the first human foot on the moon. More than half a billion people watched on television as he climbed down the ladder and proclaimed: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Buzz Aldrin joins him shortly and offers a simple but powerful description of the lunar surface: "...magnificent desolation." They explore the surface for nearly three hours, collecting samples and taking photographs.

They leave behind an American flag, a patch honoring the deceased Apollo 1 crew, and a plaque on one of Eagle's legs. It reads, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

July 8, 1889 journalist Charles Henry Dow published the first issue of The Wall Street Journal.

"Charles Henry Dow, (born Nov. 6, 1851, Sterling, Conn., U.S.—died Dec. 4, 1902, Brooklyn, N.Y.), American journalist who cofounded Dow Jones & Company, a financial news service, and The Wall Street Journal. His original contributions include the compilation in 1884 of the first average of selected U.S. stock prices that, with some modification, developed into what are known as the Dow Jones averages.

In his twenties Dow took up journalism, moving to New York City in 1880 to become a reporter for a financial news service. In 1882 Dow and Edward D. Jones (1856–1920) founded Dow Jones & Company, a firm that delivered bulletins, called “flimsies,” or “slips,” to Wall Street financial houses by messenger. The last delivery of the day included a news sheet that was the forerunner of The Wall Street Journal, which was first published July 8, 1889. Dow made his reputation as a financial expert when he was the paper’s first editor (1889–1902), and his writings for it form the basis for the “Dow theory” in market analysis. He was a member of the New York Stock Exchange (1885–91) and a partner in the brokerage firm of Goodbody, Glyn & Dow" says britannica.com

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted to approve the Declaration of Independence inside the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall). The declaration document was actually signed on August 2nd, 1776.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...”

Four days later, on July 8, 1776, the citizens of Philadelphia were called to the State House Yard by the bells of the city. At noon, Colonel John Nixon publicly read the Declaration of Independence for the first time, ever. Following the reading, the bells of the city rang in celebration until late night.

Ten days later, on July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read to jubilant crowds of Boston from the balcony of the State House at State Street, adjacent to the site of the Boston Massacre (1770) by Col. Thomas Crafts (one of the Sons of Liberty).

The U.S. Constitution was ratified June 21, 1788

The second paragraph of the United States Declaration of Independence: "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third difficult year of a bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "...that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious confederate states "...are, and henceforward shall be free." The Proclamation made emancipation a goal of the Civil War.

On April 9, 1865 Confederate General, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederacy at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The civil war ended and enslaved people in the rebellious Confederacy would now be free. Texas was the furthest Confederate State and news of the confederacy’s surrender and subsequent emancipation travelled much slower.

Union Major General Gordon Granger and his troops arrived at Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865. Two months after Lee’s surrender. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of the ending of the war reached the people of Galveston, Texas, freeing the slaves in the last rebel state.

The term Juneteenth is a blend of the words June and Nineteenth. The holiday has also been called Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day.

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution officially ended slavery and came eight months after the end of the war on December 6, 1865. The 13th Amendment states: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

The US officially recognize Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday starting June 19th, 2021

June 14th is Flag Day (USA). Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the first flag on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. "Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

Betsy Ross (1752–1836) is popularly credited with designing the first flag in Philadelphia. Ross became a notable figure representing the contribution of women in the American Revolution, but how this specific design of the U.S. flag became associated with her is unknown. The claim by her descendants that Betsy Ross contributed to the flag's design is not generally accepted by modern American scholars.

As the number of states increased, the flag was updated accordingly.

June 6, 1944, Allied Forces invaded northern France in beach landings in Normandy, in what was the largest amphibious invasion in history.

According to history.com, "During World War II (1939-1945), the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from N**i Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target.

The intention on D-Day was for 280 M4 Sherman tanks modified with Duplex Drives to launch 5000 yards (nearly 3 miles - 4,6km) from the coast, out of range of the German guns, and to arrive on the beaches minutes ahead of the infantry to provide armored support. Duplex Drive tanks, aka "DD" or "Donald Duck" tanks were a type of amphibious swimming tank developed by the British. DD tanks worked by erecting a "flotation screen" around the tank, which enabled it to float, and had two propellers powered by the tank's engine to drive them in the water.

Unfortunately, the sea conditions were much worse than the crews had trained in, which lead to the varied outcomes on June 6th 1944. Of the 280 tanks to be used, 209 arrived on the beaches and the balance were lost to the sea.

By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe."

On 6th February 2022 Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in a four-day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June.
