So much has been in the news lately about women’s breast health and younger and younger women being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sadly a lot of theses stories have a common thread, their dr have pushed them off and said “oh, lets keep an eye on that” when instead they should have moved mountains to check what was actually happening. Some of these women took matters into their own hands and advocated for themselves and fought back to get better health care, but sadly that could take months and cancer does wait.
I was one of these women who had to advocate for myself. 3 weeks ago I had a prophylactic double mastectomy with reconstruction.
I am fine, no cancer 🙏🏻, but I had a very high risk of getting it in the future. My sister fought it at 40, my aunt and mom both fought it. None of us had a genetic link. Its crazy to think thats possible. But I had other major risk factors. 3 yrs ago I started seeing a top breast dr at a world renowned cleveland hospital. 3 yrs worth of mamagrams, mri’s and 4 painful biopsies. My body and mental health were taking a beating. I was hiding the test from family b/c I was so afraid to admit I wasn’t strong enough to deal with the results. Every 3-6 months i spiraled into misery thinking I could leave my three little girls without a mom. All test would come back negative but my mind was in a very dark place.
My dr WOULD NOT listen to me when I asked about alternative methods, she pushed me off for months to even have a conversation. I found a team that listened, they heard me, understood my postion, the toll on my mental and physical health and we came up with the plan and that plan was drastic but was right for me and I was a perfect candidate for the procedure. I am healing and happy and couldnt be more proud of myself for not standing in quicksand with a dr who wouldnt listen.
Im sharing this because I want my friends and their friends to know YOU AND ONLY YOU know your bodies. You only have one, treat it well and use you voice.
My choice might not be your choice but Im here if anyone wants to talk about my journey!! 🤍
