Please Note: It is recommended that all actors wishing to audition read the script prior to auditioning. It is also recommended that all actors wishing to audition read the character descriptions in the Character Breakdown. As this is a drama with very specific character ages and types, this production will be cast according to the character descriptions listed below.

Rehearsals: Beginning Wednesday, January 22, 2025 and running Monday - Thursday 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. However, if actors are available to work at 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM Monday - Thursday, we are happy to do so.

Performance Dates: March 7-16, 2025 in the Mainstage Theater at GWC

ABOUT THE PLAY:

Part riveting crime drama, part thought-provoking sci-fi thriller, The Nether is a daring exploration of the darkest corners of human desire.

Set in the near future, the play begins in an interrogation room in which a police detective is questioning the creator of a lurid online platform that offers total sensory immersion – simply log in, select an alternative identity, and indulge your private fantasies in a virtual playground free of all moral and ethical boundaries.

Raising more questions than it answers, The Nether is a timely, disquieting, and cautionary parable about the shadowy middle-ground between the strictures of a virtuous reality and a beckoning virtual realm in which anything goes.

NOTE: This production contains adult language and situations and is intended for mature audiences.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Sims/Papa - (Male Mid 40s-Early 60s) A successful businessman. Intelligent, dominant, controlling, menacing at times.

Morris - (Female 30s-40s) A detective. Intelligent, committed, resourceful, tenacious.

Doyle - (Male Mid 40s-Early 60s) A science teacher. Nervous, vulnerable, dissatisfied with the life he leads and the world he inhabits.

Iris - (Female 9-12) A shining young girl. She is sweet and innocent, but also curious and crafty at times.

Please Note: The role of Iris can be played by a very young-looking actor up to the age of approximately 16. The ideal actor brings the maturity of an older actor with a look that is believably prepubescent from the house of a large proscenium theater.

Woodnut - (Male Late 20s-Early 30s) A curious young man. Friendly, but tentative, vulnerable, and outside of his comfort zone.

However, it’s not long before the aspiring actor becomes an absolute dictator! It’s also not long before the real inspector arrives on the scene, and Murphy's Law ensues as the company struggles to stage an unintentionally hilarious version of the Dickens classic!
