On our family’s property, there’s a birch tree located in a patch of woods some ways from the house. It’s been there for no telling how long, and from most angles looks identical to all the ones around it. But look closely, and it stands out from among the rest. Two pairs of initials stand side-by-side in that birch tree. They’re the initials of my mom and my sister and their now-husbands, carved in that same birch tree by two nervous but excited hands on the day of their respective proposals. Four initials. Two proposals. One tree. The “Birch” part of our name came into being thanks to family.
