Judging Criteria

The ABBI judging criteria is in depth and has proven to evaluate the bulls equally at events with 200+ entries. In 2022, we incorporated tenth points from quarter points. This has allowed judges to split bulls almost by hairs, and it has reduced ties at the top of the leader board.

Each judge is to evaluate a bull’s performance and keep in mind the five categories that ultimately determine their marking. All ABBI events consist of five (5) judges who mark the bulls from 1-25, the total of the five markings are then divided by five and multiplied by 4. Of course, it happens much quicker than that with our electronic judging system.

As an example.
Judge 1 – 21.8
Judge 2 – 22
Judge 3 – 22.1
Judge 4 – 21.9
Judge 5 – 22.3
Total: 110.10
Divided by 5: 22.02
Multiplied by 4: 88.08 final score

The five categories in which the judges are looking for.

Kick – How much does the bull break over past the plane of his back. How vertical is he getting.

Buck – How high are his front feet getting off the ground.

Intensity – How much effort is the bull putting out. Is he going through the motions or does he want to be there.

Direction Change – This is often referred to has spin. In one revolution, the bull is changing directions four times.

Degree of Difficulty – How hard is he to ride. There are certain traits a bull does like extending his back feet or drifting that can add to his degree of difficulty. This category is a little harder to define with a dummy, but you can see the dummy on the bull’s back moving front to back or side to side if he has more difficulty than another.

All of this is compiled in to a simple 1-25 marking from each of the five judges at an ABBI event.
