This week's Film Club pick is "Pretty Woman" featuring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts! Join us this Tuesday, February 4 at 7 PM to watch and discuss this iconic film. Here are five fun facts about the movie:

1. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had obvious chemistry upon their first meeting; however, Gere was not planning on taking the role. He was on the phone ready to turn down the part when Roberts slid him a Post-it note with the words "please say yes" written on it. He accepted the role right then.

2. Richard Gere is actually playing the piano, and also composed the piece of music he plays.

3. In the dinner scene where Vivian flings the snail across the room, the waiter who catches it says, "It happens all the time." Director Garry Marshall threw the snail himself over many shots before the actor caught the snail convincingly. He then cast the same actor in The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) years later and gave him the same line.

4. While shooting the scene in which Vivian lies down on the floor of Edward's penthouse watching old I Love Lucy (1951) re-runs, Garry Marshall tickled Julia Roberts's feet (out of camera range) to get her to laugh so hysterically.

5. The necklace that Vivian wears to the opera really cost $250,000. While filming, a security man from the jewelry store equipped with a gun was constantly standing behind the director.

Join us this Friday to watch "Ratified" (2024), a feature documentary about the 100-year struggle for gender equality!

Presented in partnership with AAUW. See below for ticketing information!

American Association of University Women and The Indiana Theater presents:

Ratified (2024)
A feature documentary about the 100-year struggle for gender equality 🌸

January 31st at 7pm. FREE to the community! Tickets are not needed to attend, but reserving guarantees you a seat. A short discussion will be held after the screening.

Tickets: https://www.simpletix.com/e/ratified-2024-tickets-200700

RATIFIED is a feature documentary about the 100-year struggle for constitutional gender equality, an inspiring story of a multi-racial, multi-generational, bi-partisan effort to make Virginia the 38th and final state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

It's also a story of how bureaucracy is used to stifle progress, and it takes a close look at the incredible perseverance of women - specifically, the Black women leaders who have taken their rightful place at the front of the movement for gender equality.

Special thanks to American Association of University Women for sponsoring this event. AAUW empowers women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Their nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 800 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, its members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.
