This month, we honored the Black storytellers and filmmakers who paved the way for us at —visionaries who broke barriers, redefined narratives, and used their craft to amplify voices that needed to be heard. These are just a few, but the legacy runs deep.
📽️ Week 1: Oscar Micheaux – The first prominent Black filmmaker, who carved his own lane and built the foundation for independent Black cinema.
🎞️ Week 2: Gordon Parks – The legendary photographer and filmmaker who used his lens to document the Black experience with depth, power, and purpose.
🎬 Week 3: Julie Dash – The first Black woman to direct a nationally distributed feature film, bringing untold stories to the screen and inspiring generations.
📺 Week 4: Ava DuVernay – The powerhouse behind Selma and When They See Us, using film for justice, impact, and cultural transformation.
And these are just a few. Let’s not forget these individuals and countless others:
🎥 Melvin Van Peebles – The godfather of modern Black cinema, whose Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song sparked the rise of independent Black films.
🎭 Sidney Poitier – The first Black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, breaking barriers and proving that representation matters.
🎥 Spike Lee – The visionary director who revolutionized Black storytelling with Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and countless cultural masterpieces.
🎭 Hattie McDaniel – The first Black actor to win an Oscar, opening doors in an industry that often refused to see Black talent in leading roles.

Here’s to the pioneers who paved the way. The stories are still waiting to be told. And we’re just getting started.
