Several senior inquiries coming in lately, and if they go anything like these girls’ sessions did, I’ll shoot them all spring and summer long! Just dipping my toe in the world of seniors for 2024. In the past, I’ve always requested that we combine it with a family session, but this year I’m going to jump in the deep end and do full senior sessions. Senior moms, take note! ❤️

Spring is in full force! And that means summer is just around the corner. (Hallelujah!) I posted my available spring and summer sessions this week, and April, May, June, and July all still have some weekend and weeknight dates available. The link is in my profile and the booking is easy! Will I see your family this year?

I finally sent a whole folder’s worth of images out to have my website refreshed and updated! All those beautiful families you’ve seen here in the past two years will finally have their spots on tarastrohlphotography.com. It’ll take a couple of weeks until it’s ready and fresh again, but until then enjoy some peeks into a couple of images you might find there!

Oh, and also, I finished my taxes today! Best. Day. Ever.

Keeping with the seniors here! This look feels very fashion photography to me. I mean, I don’t fancy myself a fashion photographer in the least, but it’s something I’ve been obsessed with for about thirty years! How could you not when your teen years were the 90s, THE heyday of supermodels? I used to have magazine pages on my walls of Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Nikki Taylor- I wanted to BE them. I wanted to photograph them. My sister and I used to photograph each other in dramatic lamplight pretending to be models. 😂 It was not pretty! Not like teens today! They’ve grown up in the selfie era and know their angles, know where to look, how to “smize” (as 90s icon Tyra would say). It all works and turns out these incredible portraits like this one here of my cousin’s daughter. Number two this year on my list! Only one more day left- tomorrow I’ll reveal my number one favorite photograph from my 2023 sessions. ❤️

2023: the year I discovered that I do like photographing seniors? 😁

I have a rule. I only photograph seniors if it’s in conjunction with a family session. To be honest, I didn’t feel confident photographing seniors. It seems to take a special skill set and a special comfort level around teenagers. But I also have a theory. That theory being that the older my own children get, the more confident I am photographing older and older kids. When my kids were babies, I thought I only wanted to photograph newborn sessions and baby sessions. As my kids grew and my family grew, I only wanted to photograph family sessions. And now that I have a 10-year-old and she’s just getting older and older, I might actually feel comfortable photographing seniors as well? We’ll see. For now it’s still the interaction of a family session that really hits my heart. And if photographing, your senior is part of that, then I’m all for it!

Sneaking in just before midnight!

If I’m being honest, I always feel that the youngest child in the family gets all the good snuggly shots from each session. I almost feel bad for the oldest child because, by default, they are the biggest and sometimes least easy to snuggle in. So I’m surprised, and happily so, that so many of these top 10 images feature the oldest child in the family.

Like this one. I think it’s me knowing that she’s the oldest, and there’s something special about that. Feeling fairly certain that she has a special bond with her dad because she was the first. And I love the eyes, the dress color, her skin tone- it all comes together to make an interesting look.

Top 10 of 2023: Number 6️⃣

I don’t think this one has even been shared once yet- not on my stories, in the grid, nowhere. But sometimes it takes a second or third look through a gallery before a particular image stands out to me. Case in point. 👆🏻

I think for me it’s the golden glow, the drippy sunlight. The idea that it’s just a piggyback ride through a wide open, desolate, sun-drenched field. (Never mind that there were hundreds of people milling around this park, I was one of about 30 family photographers there that night, or that there was a housing development just in the distance over her shoulder! Not the norm for my sessions, but I took a chance on a old location I hadn’t used in years.) No matter how the image got made though, I’m in love with the result!

Top 10 of 2023: Number 7️⃣

The window light, the subtle shadows, no busy background, and the way the baby seems to take no notice of the camera, clearly interested in whatever is going on on the other side of his nursery.

This is a photo I would blow up and frame. Knowing what I know- that this baby is a first born child, that this family may grow in the future, that this may be the house he was brought home in but may not be the house he lives his whole childhood in. I would want this memory, this moment in time, framed.
