Who's up for some groundbreaking?

On Thursday the Friends of Garfield Park broke ground on a project to restore the fountains at the Garfield Park Sunken Garden. Mayor Joe Hogsett said, "When we talk about Garfield Park and the Sunken Garden fountains, what we are really talking about is the spirit of Indianapolis – the places that make up our city’s identity." That spirit and identity is what parks and public spaces are all about!

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, Friends of Garfield Park President Lynda Burrello and Vice President Jan Lesniak, Smock Fansler President Tom Fansler, and Indy Parks Deputy Director Don Colvin broke ground on the restoration project.

"I started working with Indy Parks as an environmental education camp counselor at Eagle Creek Park’s Earth Discovery Center in 2020 and 2021. As a camp counselor, I taught kids ages 4-15 about nature while leading activities such as hiking, canoeing, fishing, and archery. I loved this job so much that after my second summer ended, I interviewed for a Naturalist position at the Ornithology Center and got hired to teach public programs and help year-round with nature education lessons! In August of 2022, I became the Assistant Park Manager at the Ornithology Center, where I am now responsible for planning summer camp fun, supporting a team of naturalists, and assisting with the daily care and training of the birds of prey who live at the Ornithology Center. I love my job with Indy Parks because I use my unique skills and talents to pursue my passion for environmental education and I get to work with animals daily! This Thursday marks the second class of our DIP-IN Program! This month focuses on maintaining a healthy population of gut bacteria.

Diabetes Impact Program - Indianapolis Neighborhoods will help community members learn more about healthy and easy cooking skills.

Classes will take place at Frederick Douglass Family Center on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 11am in the Frankie Casel Community Room.

Hey everyone! We wanted to share with you all of the exciting new things happening at IWSP! It’s been a long time since we have posted but we are back! If you have been wondering what all the construction is about, we’re happy to share that we are getting a new concession pavilion that will have restrooms and parking for our sports field events. Pardon our yellow tape areas while we continue making improvements for our community 😊

AmeriCorps volunteers are hard at work!

Last week volunteers worked at Ellenberger Park to plant native flowers and other plants in the new Pollinator Patio. Pollinators like bees and butterflies are hugely important to Indiana agriculture and the strength of our ecosystem.
