🖼️ Join us next TUES. SEPTEMBER 24th for an evening of music, beverages, conversation, and art, featuring a viewing of the “COMING OF AGE” exhibit, currently on view Inglewood, and a fireside chat with artist Nia Simone . Doors open at 7:00pm 🎶☕👩🏾🎨
:
From a child growing up in Compton, Nia was always drawing or coloring, and by the age of six, her life would change and she would spend the rest of her formative years in Ohio, leaving her vulnerable to the criticisms that came along with being “different.” By the time she was a teenager, her drawings transformed along with her experiences, allowing Nia to find safety within her paintings, expressing her most raw emotions. In “Coming of Age,” Nia uses self-portraiture and surrealism to expand upon the complexities of Black womanhood. In an attempt to birth room for empathy, and self-discovery through juxtaposing emotions and topics we may dismiss as a community with saturated colors and detailed backgrounds, she invites us as viewers to reflect, grow, and heal. Whether it be topics of intergenerational trauma, not feeling pretty enough, our relationships with one another, illness or just being young, she hopes that people don’t shy away from tears and hurt in an attempt to hide behind facades, instead understanding that the only way out is through, and when we make it out, boy was the journey worth it.✨💫
