Join us for a Caribbean-flavored celebration of the holiday season with Des Moines’ premier steel band, Tropical Steel. Performing their “sweet island sounds” around Iowa since 1997, this orchestra of talented multi-instrumentalists has been featured at numerous festivals and events including the World Food & Music Festival, Special Olympics USA Games, and the Iowa State Fair. Bringing their signature Caribbean and Latin vibes, Tropical Steel will warm up the holidays with unique versions of traditional Christmas carols, favorite holiday tunes from various cultures, and songs of celebration and peace. Expect a family-friendly, joyous explosion of sound and color that will leave you astounded and full of holiday cheer as only the steel pan can. Don’t be surprised if the limbo pole makes an appearance and your family gets invited down to check out the instruments!

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance!

Iowa Conservatory’s She Kills Monsters premiers tomorrow, Friday October 25th, and runs all weekend! Come check out all the hard work from some amazing students, and enjoy their performance of She Kills Monsters! Tickets available at thejamesic.com.

She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans, a young woman grieving for her deceased sister. The Evans sisters never were especially close, but after Tilly’s death Agnes receives a notebook containing a game scenario created by her sister. She discovers that Tilly was a well-known Dungeons & Dragons player, and that she was passionate about online fantasy gaming. In order to unlock more secrets about her mysterious young sibling, Agnes recruits a “dungeon master” named Chuck to help her understand and grieve Tilly. Chock-full of supermodel elves, do******ix warrior women, and nasty ogres, She Kills Monsters is a surprisingly sweet tale of friendship, loss, and acceptance.

These 12 ink engravings represent seasonal milestones in the progression from fall into winter, and winter into spring, inviting us to appreciate the beauty in the dark season and approach the cycles of life with equanimity and reverence.

Been thinking of doing an open mic? Join us tomorrow for House of Words open mic night! This is a new & interactive open mic where creatives have a home that fosters and supports their growth while providing top notch entertainment for those who appreciate performing arts.

The first half will have 12 open mic performers and the second half will have 4 artist spotlights. Each open mic performer will have the opportunity to win over the audience and earn an artist spotlight that will be professionally filmed! We’ll see you there!
