The content of this page is limited to messages or comments about the University of Iowa. For more than 150 years, Old Capitol has represented the pioneering spirit of Iowa and The University of Iowa. The last capitol of the Iowa territory, it served as Iowa's first state capitol from 1846 to 1857. When the state government moved to Des Moines in 1857, Old Capitol served as the University's first

building and the founding place of many departments. In 1976, Old Capitol became a National Historic Landmark and public museum. After fours years of recovery from a devastating fire in 2001 that destroyed the building's dome and cupola, Old Capitol Museum reopened in May 2006 as a vital cultural and educational resource for more than 30,000 visitors, researchers, and schoolchildren each year. The Old Capitol Museum houses a gift shop, an educational Discovery Center where kids can learn about early Iowans with computer inter-actives, the Hanson Family Humanities Gallery, and the Keyes' Gallery for Arts, Humanities, and Sciences. The galleries house changing exhibits year round that explore a wide variety of themes. Throughout the year, the Museum also hosts a variety of lectures, films, workshops, and other educational programs related to its rotating exhibits and Iowa history.

Peter Goes Global: Foreign Language Copies of The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Lead Public Services Librarian Special Collections & Archives Lindsey Moen is on display now! 🐰🩵

The collection is just the tip of the iceberg for Lindsey: "While this display highlights some of my foreign language copies of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, my collection expands beyond books, including pamphlets, printed ephemera, dishware, stuffed animals, jewelry, artwork, miniatures, textiles, and other odds and ends that I can get my hands on."

Check out the rest of Lindsey's collector statement at https://pentacrestmuseums.uiowa.edu/peter-goes-global-foreign-language-copies-tale-peter-rabbit and come see the exhibit for yourself in Macbride Hall (first floor, south side).

As our Native Cultures of Iowa exhibits undergo construction and repatriation processes, we remain committed to upholding the principles of NAGPRA and teaching. Our changes may involve temporary closures or adjustments to certain displays as we work toward repatriating culturally sensitive materials in accordance with federal law and in collaboration with the Office of the State Archaeologist and Indigenous stakeholders.

Did you know that the birds featured in these Iowa City Downtown District murals are native to Iowa? We also have each displayed in Bird Hall, and many of them were collected in the late 1800s!

💛 Black-capped chickadee
🤍 White-breasted nuthatch
❤️ Indigo bunting
🩷 Gray catbird
💚 Dark-eyed junco
🩵 Cassin's finch

The murals were painted by Iowa City artist Jan Duschen, and they can be found near Brewery Square and Marco's Grilled Cheese. You can also find the same birds right here at the Museum of Natural History, AND you can see the real birds thriving in Iowa today.

One way or another, then or now, they're still birds of Iowa and works of art 🪶

🎼 Piano Sundays returns for the 2024-25 season! 🎼

The University of Iowa School of Music, in partnership with the Old Capitol Museum and West Music, is proud to host this annual tradition. Performances will be held in the beautiful Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber, performed on the historic, rebuilt Steinway grand piano “Rose.” This is an incredible opportunity for the community to see and hear the university’s talented piano students and faculty in a distinguished building that serves as a center for history and culture.

Please join us and mark your calendars for the performances in this year's series:

🎹 November 3, 2024: Alan Huckleberry and Studio
🎹 March 9, 2025: Doreen Lee and UI Collaborative Pianists
🎹 April 6, 2025: Réne Lecuona and Studio

These concerts are free and open to the public.
