OC Music & Dance is honored to receive the "Outstanding Arts Organization" award at the 2024 OC Arts Awards, held yesterday at the Samueli Theater in Costa Mesa!

"The 24th OC Arts Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in the arts, has become Orange County’s most prestigious honor for those who have dedicated their lives to the county’s cultural life. [...] During its seven years [OCMD] has evolved from a dream to provide children arts training to one of Orange County’s premier performing arts schools and is planning a major new facility in Irvine’s Great Park." —Culture OC, "OC Arts Awards Honor Carl St.Clair, Nancy Ruyter and Other Major Local Figures" by Paul Hodgins and Richard Chang

OCMD thanks Arts Orange County for the recognition, and are delighted to stand alongside Pacific Symphony music director Carl St.Clair, Emerging Artist and filmmaker Quyên Nguyen-Le, UC Irvine dance professor Nancy Lee Ruyter, and the other 2024 honorees.

Most importantly, OCMD thanks our students, parents, and faculty for their continued participation and support.

China's ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Xie Feng, shared a video on social media featuring OCMD youth ambassadors in China!

From July 23-30, the city of Xiamen hosted "US Youth ambassadors in Xiamen 2024." Over the week, 25 participants, including 8 OCMD students, explored Xiamen's natural ecology, technology, traditional dishes, and rich historical culture. The OCMD students performed for their hosts at the Xiamen Music School, further enriching the cultural exchange between the two countries.

OCMD CEO Doug Freeman writes, "Our goals in traveling to Xiamen, China, were to expose our students to the culture of another country and to build new friendships with its children. We know we were successful on both objectives and we thank China’s ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Xie Feng, for his recognition and encouragement!"

Our Story

OC Music & Dance is an Orange County-based nonprofit performing arts school started by Pick Up Stix founder and talented clarinet musician, Charles (“Charlie”) Zhang. Following the financial success of his restaurant chains, Charlie was eager to give back to the Orange County community. He created OC Music & Dance in 2017 with the goal of making high-quality musical instruction available to all students, regardless of their ability to pay for an education in the performing arts. Our mission is to nurture, inspire and empower Orange County’s most committed and talented youth to achieve their dreams and provide a path for them to follow their passions.

With an expert staff and state-of-the-art facilities, we provide a wide variety of programs, including private lessons and group classes for voice, dance, instrument, ensemble groups, and our newly launched Jazz 360 and Pop Academy programs. Our music and dance school in Irvine is fully equipped with 8 music rooms, 2 large dance studios, a professional recording studio, and a 150-seat Black Box Theater. We are also proud to house The Monkey Business Cafe, a fully operational restaurant providing marketable employment skills to foster and at-risk youth.

Since our 2017 opening, we have partnered with local school districts and leading performing arts organizations, including the Pacific Symphony, Steinway & Sons, The Wooden Floor, Orange County School of the Arts, and Arts Orange County.

Call or visit our website to learn more about our facilities, enroll in our performing arts programs, and learn how you can support our mission of nurturing, inspiring, and empowering Orange County students through musical and dance education.
