In response to many who have expressed concern over the excessive water/sq**rt gun battles that have escalated over the years, please be respectful whether you are in the parade or a spectator. The city has asked that there be no water balloons. Please only engage in water fights with fellow water fighters, not those who are just trying to ride or spectate peacefully in the parade. Please do not sq**rt people, animals, and babies in the face. Unfortunately there have been numerous injuries because of this and some have stopped participating because the water fighting has become so aggressive. We also ask that water hoses not be used. We want everyone to have fun and be able to participate safely.

The annual golf cart parade began over 30 years ago when Bess Hill, a resident of IOP since 1933, decided one 4th of July that a parade was needed. She fashioned some paper hats out of newspaper, put some music on a boom box and marched the two blocks down 2nd Avenue with her husband, Sugar, and five or six other family members. The next year it grew to a dock cart, a Volkswagen Beetle adorned in a patriotic table cloth and Bess’ friend, Mimi, beating a drumstick against a trash can. Soon the parade grew to include more family, more friends, more neighbors and a city fire truck to lead the way. Over the years Bess has put a sign in her yard stating the time and place to line up to begin the parade. Many islanders still make a point to drive by the sign for each year’s details. Never did Miss Bess imagine her little gesture of patriotism would grow into the event that it is now. Hundreds of golf carts and spectators now make it an Independence Day tradition. Miss Bess, now 94 and in her same home her father built on Charleston Blvd, will be watching another celebration of our freedom.
