The Statler hotel is pleased to announce Heidi Gaensbauer’s promotion to Student Director of Sales and Marketing!🥳👏

Heidi is an incoming senior in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration and originally from Denver, Colorado. She started her journey at the Statler Hotel her freshman year and since then she grown tremendously. Whether learning Delphi, contracts, resumes and BEOs, managing groups, prospecting or working on special projects, she has been a true leader amongst her peers. She has cross-trained in almost every hotel department and continues to grow her knowledge of the hotel every day. Heidi is a passionate hotelie and served as the Director of Conference Services for the 99th Hotel Ezra Cornell and was also a mentor in the Hotel Student Mentorship Program.

The Statler Hotel is proud to announce the promotion of Maggie Folwell to the position of Student Learning & Development Manager. 🎉👏

Maggie is a senior in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration, originally from Walpole, Massachusetts. She began working in the Statler Hotel during the fall semester of 2021, in the hotel’s Meetings & Events Department where she quickly mastered the skills of banquet operations. In the fall of 2023, Maggie shifted over to the hotel’s Learning & Development team to focus on facilitating the New Staff Orientation program and helping to plan other programs. Maggie has developed into an impressive, confident, and poised leader and ambassador for the hotel, HLDP, the school and our school’s alumni. Over her time with us, Maggie has helped lead several HLDP meetings and events, she has worked as the Student Assistant to Dean Kate Walsh, she has served as Executive VP of the Hotel School Mentorship Program, as the VP of Marketing for the Cornell Society Collegiate Chapter and as an Assistant Director for HEC 98.

Upon graduation, Maggie will be working for the PM Hotel Group in Washington D.C. as an Operational Project Analyst.

Meet the trailblazers behind our legacy: Ellsworth Statler and Howard B. Meek.

Ellsworth Statler was a visionary hotelier, starting his career as a 13 year old bellman in Wheeling, West Virginia and eventually opening his first hotel in Buffalo, NY. He had learned the importance of hospitality, guest service, and sought to enhance guest amenities through his experience working and was skeptical of the idea that you could learn to manage a hotel through a classroom.

Howard B. Meek was Cornell's first professor of hospitality management and was present during the school's first Hotel Ezra Cornell (HEC). This was a weekend where industry leaders were invited to join in on classes and experience hospitality delivered by students. Following the success of the first HEC, Ellsworth Statler was invited to HEC the following year.

Although previously skeptical of learning hospitality in a classroom, Statler was sold on the school and the service. And with that, the Statler Foundation was created, providing financial recourses to establish the School of Hotel Administration and build Statler Hall in 1950. Professor Meek became the school's first Dean and insisted we provide students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in hotel management. This led to the creation of the 36 room Statler Inn which was located right next to the Hotel School.

Step back in time to 1950! 🏨

In 1950, a scaled-down Statler Inn with 36 guest room hotel was completed in conjunction with Statler Hall. The Inn provided students with a convenient opportunity to gain practical experience in restaurant management, food preparation, and innkeeping. Ellsworth Statler's wife, Alice, honored his promise alive based on the request made through his will.

Despite its small size, the Statler Inn did not lack in amenities. It featured three restaurants— the Main Dining Room, Cafe Rhea, and the Rathskeller as well as a ballroom, several banquet rooms, and the university's faculty club. ✨😮
