the Keyboard! The Blüthner Aliquot Grand piano in the CCHK collection is from Leipzig, 1878 and features aliquot stringing, giving it a complex and interesting sound. Many notes on this piano have a fourth string above the regular notes that is not struck by the hammer; it is there purely for sympathetic resonance. There are several opportunities coming up to hear this unique instrument in action at Barnes Hall!

First, the concert on Nov. 1 at 7:30pm celebrates the musical and intellectual legacy of Chao Yuen-Ren, a pioneering Cornellian and singular figure among early 20th-century diasporic Chinese intellectuals. We will hear selections from his art songs. Event organizer Morton Wan has chosen the Blüthner to bring to life music by Chao Yuen-Ren and his contemporaries, who were experimenting with Western art song forms through a Chinese lens, because its warm, resonant tone perfectly embodies the ethos of the Romantic lieder tradition that inspired them.

Next, pianist Jack Yarbrough will use three instruments in his recital on Nov. 6 at 7:30pm: the Pleyel, Blüthner, and Kovner Steinway, gradually transitioning our ears from the earliest piano and the earliest repertoire on the program (Chopin) to the most recent, a work by Linda Catlin Smith from 2014. On the Blüthner, Jack will play a very late work by Franz Liszt as well as a Busoni arrangement of a Bach chorale. Both pieces benefit greatly from the deep, round bass register and the luscious resonance this instrument provides. Jack notes that the Blüthner has almost the full range of a modern piano, and is totally approachable by someone only used to modern actions, yet has a distinctly different sound and touch, and he “could listen to the decay of this piano forever.”

Finally, guest artist Stefania Neonato performs on Nov. 13 at 7:30pm in a recital featuring preludes by Charles Alkan and Claude Debussy.

All events are free and open to the public!

Meet Ariel Mo, a first year DMA in Performance/Keyboard studies!

Ariel says, "I started playing piano at the age of 3. Over the years my understanding of what it means to be a pianist has taken on many different forms--playing solo or with others, playing on the keys or playing inside the lid (or on it), performing onstage or organizing behind the scenes..."

She created and organized ALL THE WRONG NOTES: Charles Ives at 150, a music festival comprised of four concerts. See Ariel perform in the remaining concerts on October 25 and 31 and the final concert on November 12! More information about ALL THE WRONG NOTES: Charles Ives at 150 can be found on our FB events page.

Meet Freya Nangle! Freya is a senior from Connecticut double-majoring in Psychology and the College Scholar Program, focusing on how music impacts mental health, and she is writing an honors thesis on the relationship between music, genetics, and psychopathology! She plays violin in the Cornell Symphony Orchestra and is the president of the Orchestras organization! Plus, she works in the music library in Lincoln Hall. Swipe through to read more about Freya's musical journey!

She says, “I am so grateful to have continued my involvement in music here at Cornell for the past three years; sharing something I love with such amazing people has changed my life for the better, and I hope to continue experiencing music with friends for years to come.

Our first concert of the year is so exciting because it features both CCO and CSO. Both groups have been working very hard these first few weeks of the semester on some really fun music–there are older works from the Classical and Romantic periods, and also more modern pieces, so everyone will find something they enjoy!”

Meet Sarah Cooke! Sarah is a senior from Pennsylvania studying environmental engineering to hopefully one day help make the world a more renewable place and protect our planet. She sings with the Chorus and is the general manager of the group! She says, “There are so many amazing groups on campus to find community in all while exploring your passions!”

“I started singing with the Philadelphia Girls Choir when I was 12 years old and I fell in love with choir singing. Creating music with voices is such a beautiful form of expression and sharing that with others through a choir working as a single entity is my favorite thing. That passion carried into college where I have been involved in singing with the Chorus. The Chorus is a wonderful community where I have made lifelong friends all while creating beautiful music.”

“Our Homecoming Concert is a great way to begin the hoco weekend with our awesome Cornell Songs as well as listen to some of my favorite choir pieces such as, my personal favorite, Gustav Holst's two-treble-choir "Ave Maria".”

Meet Jack Dobosh! Jack is a senior from Massachusetts double majoring in Economics & Music. In the music department, he spends a lot of time working in Kops Studio in Lincoln Hall, both managing the space and working on recording projects. He also plays lead alto in the Jazz Ensemble and is in a combo.

About his musical journey, Jack says, “I grew up playing bass and running sound at my church, and picked up the saxophone in 4th grade. I spent a long time making beats on my computer and learning about audio production and recording.

After coming to Cornell, I found opportunities to record student ensembles, run live sound at PMA, and grow as an instrumentalist. This culminated with an internship at a recording studio in NYC, where I got to study under industry professionals to continue honing my craft.
