I have been playing and mixing music for crowds since at least 2004 in the Finger Lakes and 1,000 Island areas of New York. It started officially when I entered a competition at an upscale ‘Bar with Dancing’ (not a ‘Club’, per the owner) on a cold Wednesday night in 2008. The “DJ iPod Sink or Swim” Challenge was on the slowest night of the week, so the Owner had little to lose. After the spring se

mester was over, the winner with the most bar sales won a prize. Well, after increasing sales numbers every week, I came in a close second. I did, however, win the prize of being the exclusive DJ of Wednesday nights for 12 years! Wednesday night became the biggest night of the week and I had the pleasure of entertaining thousands of people over the years. From political leaders, world famous MMA fighters, other DJ friends, Grammy winning artists: if they were out on a Wednesday night, I was entertaining them. Being a DJ usually invites inquiries about other events, mainly weddings or holiday parties. I have had the honor of being part of dozens and dozens of special life changing events over the years. One of the highlights of my career was on an early summer afternoon when I got the call from my good friend Chris who asked if it was ok to give my contact info to the entertainment director of del Lago Resort and Casino. I said that sounded great, as I had traveled to see Chris DJ multiple times at del Lago. Soon after, the director called and asked if I could make it that night to DJ. This pattern of last-minute ‘filling-in’ happened throughout that summer. Finally, he said, “we really need to just put you on the schedule.” And since 2018, I have been proudly doing my part at del Lago to be a piece of the many, many entertainment options we have every day and night!

A German engineer was tasked with a goal that sounded impossible: shrink a digital music file by nearly 95% without ruining the sound.

This engineer was Karlheinz Brandenburg. He and his team at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany took on the challenge in the late 1980s.

The problem was that high-quality digital audio files were massive, making them impractical to store or send over the internet at the time.

Their solution was based on psychoacoustics, the study of how we perceive sound. They realized the human ear can't hear every single frequency in a recording.

The algorithm they created cleverly removes the parts of the audio that are inaudible to most people, dramatically reducing the file size.

This new format was standardized in 1991 and officially named MPEG-1 Audio Layer III. We know it today as the MP3. 🎵

The file extension ".mp3" was officially adopted in 1995, and it completely changed the world.

Suddenly, you could store hundreds of songs on a device that fit in your pocket. The age of digital music and the iPod was born directly from this breakthrough. 💿

Brandenburg's work paved the way for the entire digital music revolution, fundamentally changing how we buy, store, and listen to music forever.
