Something "Blue"...While wearing or carrying “something blue” was also meant to deflect that Evil Eye, the color blue stands for love, purity and fidelity—three key qualities for a solid marriage.

Traditionally, the “something blue” was often a blue garter worn beneath the bride’s white dress. This is still a great option for today, but there are so many great ways to bring in your something blue! Sapphire jewelry, a pair of fantastic blue shoes, or gorgeous hydrangeas, just to name a few!

Something "Borrowed"... represents the support and love from your friends and family! They offer something borrowed as a symbol of their love and to bring the couple good luck. When the item comes from someone who is married, the couple ensures that a little bit of that couple's good fortune is shared with them!

The borrowed item can be sentimental, yet practical, such as a comb worn by your grandmother on her wedding day, or the veil worn by a loved one. If you and your partner don't have "a song", you can ask to "borrow" a friend's first dance tune! Centerpieces can be so expensive! Why not borrow vases from friends and family to create fun, eclectic centerpieces???

Something "New"... represents the couple's new union and optimism for the future. It only makes sense to start something new with...something new!

Your "something new" can be a gift purchased by someone else, or something you get yourself! Some could argue that your gown or veil, etc., could be your something new, but we here at St. John's think it's more fun to buy a special "something new"!!! This could be a piece of jewelry to wear on the big day, keepsake champagne flutes for the toast, or maybe matching tattoos for both the Mr. & Mrs.!

Something "Old"... in the late 1800's, when this famous rhyme began, the "old" item was intended to protect the babies to come from the Evil Eye. In modern culture, the something old represents continuity and staying connected to your family!

There are so many fun ways to incorporate this tradition into your big day! Drive away in a fancy, vintage vehicle! Let the men get in on it by wearing vintage floral brooches instead of boutonnieres. Use fabric from a loved one's wedding gown or veil to create a unique ring pillow. Hold those you love near to you by including their antique photos in your bouquet.

Have you ever wondered where the phrase "tying the knot" came from?
In many cultures around the world—including Celtic, Hindu, and Egyptian weddings—the hands of the bride and groom are literally tied together to demonstrate the couple's commitment to each other and their new bond.
