Celebrating Black History Month:
🇹🇹Claudia Jones🇹🇹

This Black History Month, we shine a light on Claudia Jones, a Trinidadian-born activist, journalist, and visionary who played a pivotal role in advocating for Black rights and cultural empowerment.

Born in 1915 in Trinidad and Tobago, Claudia migrated to the United States as a child, where she became deeply involved in political activism. As a dedicated member of the Communist Party USA, she fought against racial and gender inequalities, becoming a fierce advocate for Black women and working-class communities. Her activism led to her deportation from the U.S. in 1955, after which she settled in the United Kingdom.

In London, she continued her work, founding the West Indian Gazette, Britain’s first major Black newspaper, which provided a voice for Caribbean immigrants facing discrimination. Recognizing the need for cultural unity, she also played a key role in establishing the Notting Hill Carnival, an event that has grown into one of the world’s largest celebrations of Caribbean culture.

Claudia Jones’s legacy is one of resilience, justice, and empowerment. Her fight for racial equality and cultural pride remains an inspiration to Caribbean communities worldwide.
