As more Americans travel internationally this summer, the wait time to get a passport renewed is also increasing.

According to the latest update from the U.S. State Department, the processing times for a passport renewal are now 10 to 13 weeks for routine processing. That does not include the mailing time, which could add an extra four weeks (two to get to the passport agency and two to get arrive back to the applicant).

That means that, with mailing time included, it could take up to 17 weeks to renew a passport and get it back in the mail, which could heavily impact the busy summer travel season if travelers aren’t planning.

Renew Your Passport Now if You Plan To Travel Abroad This Summer!

If international travel is on your agenda this summer and you’re a U.S. citizen, double-check your passport now and make sure it’s not expired.
The State Department recently issued an advisory on Twitter informing travelers of the lengthy processing times that are now a reality for passport renewals or approvals. The government agency's standard passport processing is taking anywhere from eight to 11 weeks. And even expedited service will take as much as five to seven weeks.
That means if you’re planning to travel in June (or anytime this summer really), and you need to renew your passport, the time to start doing so is now.
