We received a delightful email from Allandale Farm asking if we would be so kind as to give their last length (75 feet!) of fresh garland someplace to hang. As you stroll down South Street, enjoy the festive swags along our fence courtesy of our farm in the city! Thank you for the generous holiday donation, Allandale! We will see you in the spring. 🌲

In the final month of the 100 for the 100th campaign, we are highlighting Harriet Avis Manning Whitcomb—a community leader, philanthropist, historian of Jamaica Plain, and centenarian. Born on September 8th, 1838 in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Harriet soon after moved with her family to JP where she would live the rest of her long life.

On January 5th, 1871 she married Austin Fuller Whitcomb, a wealthy merchant from Vermont, she was 33 and he was 39 at the time. They lived in a stately and well-furnished house in the southwestern part of JP, where they raised three daughters together. Sadly, two of Harriet’s daughters died young. Her husband, Austin, died in 1892 at the age of 60.

As a widow of means, Harriet had the time and money to involve herself in a number of philanthropic organizations and community betterment projects. She was a charter member of the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club when it was founded in 1896. She remained an active member until her death in 1941 at the age of 102! She wrote “Annals and Reminiscences of Jamacia Plain”, published in 1897, which is still considered a preeminent history of the Neighborhood today. In her later years, she dressed in a manner—depicted in the above photograph of Harriet—that often drew comparison to Queen Victoria, an association she leaned into happily by all accounts.
