A drop veil is simply that, a wedding veil that is flat and just lays over your head. It can have a pin or comb to hold it in position. This style is smooth and flat rather than fluffy. The silk chiffon fabric adds to the effect because it lays flat. This drop veil is made of white silk chiffon at 64” long with white silk ribbon folded over the edge for the same look whether worn up or down.

Fitting Room Renovation: Washing the windows. Window garden! This room was so full of stuff that it was hard to get near the windows. I don’t know how long it’s been but long enough to have a little garden growing on the outside. This is what I found when I tilted the window in to wash the outside. Note: I used a bleach cleaner which cleaned well, but it removed some of the stain from the window sill and left bleached spots anywhere it splattered on the newly painted walls. I was able to touch up both right away. Lesson learned, do this first or protect the surrounding surfaces or use a milder cleaner.

Fitting Room Renovation: The purpling/painting the walls. Taping the ceiling and trim took way longer than expected. The little hallway to the door has so many little corners and small spaces by the doorframe that made it take longer to tape and it took longer to paint. The rest of the room went fast. Purple has been my favorite color since middle school so the decor of this room is vintage purple. The darker true purple crayon color is my favorite but this small room needs a light color to help it look bigger and brighter. The name of this paint is “On Broadway” semigloss by Everydays True Value.

Of course as I was working on the walls I realized we never refinished the floor in this room.

Fitting Room Renovation: Repair the walls. The old walls had cracks especially around the windows from the previous windows and frames. The good news is that the new windows and frames stopped additional damage. I broke off all loose plaster and filled it with joint compound. Pardon our dust! Instead of sculpting with needle and thread I’ve been sculpting with sandpaper. It takes a lot of patience just like detailed sewing, but the end result is worth it. You could say I’ve been doing alterations on this room.

I also have good help! Cheeto and Jack approved the progress.

Fitting Room Renovation: Paint the ceiling. The original ceiling was yellow about 30 years ago when we bought the house. I thought it was neat having the ceiling in color, but I didn’t like the yellow. There were also a few cracks and chips. Sponge painting was new and popular at the time, so I repaired the cracks and chips and sponge painted it with a light blue, like the sky with sunshine. It was nice for the bedroom at the time.

Now it was time for a complete painting. There were a few cracks and chips again and the addition left areas of white underneath the added sponge painting. I washed the ceiling, then made the repairs and painted it white. Since this is now a small room my goal has been to make it as bright as possible to help it feel bigger. There’s already a huge difference with the dark green wallpaper off and the white ceiling.

Fitting Room renovation: removing wallpaper. We bought this house in the mid ‘90s when it was still a one story two bedroom starter home. It was built around 1960 so the walls aren’t the drywall we are used to today. The plaster had cracks and some chipped away. I repaired what I could. It had old windows and metal window frames. Metal conducts heat and cold, so in winter they were covered in ice. Under the windows is the worst of the plaster damage. We replaced the frames and windows in 2003.

When I removed the wallpaper I was expecting the worst, but the damage didn’t continue. My original repairs were still good. However I only repaired what I had to and then covered it with wallpaper. I didn’t know as much about this as I do now and the plan was wallpaper.

The ceiling had similar issues, so I repaired what I could and then sponge painted it to add a creative look and disguise the cracks. The ceiling was yellow when we bought the house, so were most of walls in the rooms.

In 2003 we had a second floor added. That little white home is the before. The big yellow house is what it became. The new fitting room was once the main bedroom, but only half the original size. The wall was moved way in to make room for the stairs. There was a closet and now part of the closet is the doorway to the existing room.

I’ve been enjoying the memories as I’ve been uncovering the walls. The white next to the yellow wall is where they moved walls and joined new walls to the old. The ceiling is like that too. I had extra wallpaper and was able to fill in the new walls with it. The ceiling had white in addition to the old yellow, so I sponge painted it with the same blue.

That sponge painting was a good solution for years, but as I was removing wallpaper I realized this time around the ceiling needs repaired and painted.

Custom Stitches by Roxanne/veilsbyroxanne.com is celebrating 20 years in business this year! It started when my kids were very young as a way to stay close and flexible for family. I was so excited, but I knew ultimately if it was meant to be it was in the hands of God. I am blessed and so thankful to all the customers, near, far and abroad.

After 20 years my space is expanding! My kids are grown and on their own, both doing well making their way in this world. That has left us with some space in the house. 20 years ago I wanted to eventually move to a storefront. I work from home and back then working from home was not common and often seen as less professional and not a serious business. That has completely changed! A storefront would not help this business because I can take appointments at times that work with my customers schedules. Working from home is also more cost effective.

This room was my husband’s den where he had all of his bass guitars, amplifiers, cd player, stacks of music cds, books and magazines, workout equipment and fishing and fly tying equipment and more. It’s 8’10”x7’3” and it was packed. We moved him upstairs to a much bigger room. Now he has room to practice his bass and everything is organized and accessible. Plus when I have customers he’s not trapped in the little room while people are changing.

That leaves this little room right next to the sewing room available. Meet the new fitting room. Happy anniversary Custom Stitches by Roxanne and customers!!!

A lettuce edge veil waves at the edge even when it’s not flowing in the wind. Here’s a look at the same veil posted yesterday while it’s not blowing in the wind. This is a champagne color with matching thread sewn in close stitches (rolled hem/pencil edge) over monofilament (fishing line) to form the curly wavy lettuce edge.

A lettuce edge wedding veil has a curly edge. It’s still a simple light veil, but the ruffling curling edge adds a design element that compliments many wedding dresses. This edge can be done at many lengths, but works best on short and medium length veils.
