211 is now handling Code Blue alerts for Chautauqua County.

A Code Blue warning is triggered when temperatures reach 32 degrees or lower, including wind chill, and access to warming shelters is open to anyone in need of assistance.

Email alerts from the Department of Social Services will end Thursday, Nov. 28.

Individuals and agencies can enroll in automatic alerts from 211 by texting “CODEBLUECHQ” to 898211. Code Blue alerts will be sent out by 2pm each day.

The United Ways of Chautauqua County recently facilitated strategic work sessions with the Chautauqua County Homeless Coalition and other key agencies as part of its work as a mobilization engine for change in Chautauqua County. Through that process, United Way connected 211 with key county government departments and coalition members – which directly led to utilizing 211 as the Code Blue alert system.

211 is a three digit phone number that connects people to services. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week people can dial 211 or 888-696-9211 and talk to a trained information & referral specialist who is able to identify services in the community that can provide them with the help they need. Across the nation, the 211 service is funded by the United Way network. Here in Western New York, 211 WNY is partially funded by the United Ways of Chautauqua County.

There are no other changes to the Code Blue process. All individuals and families should report to DSS during normal business hours 830-430 to get assistance for Code Blue. Individuals with no minor children should be referred to the warming center, Families can be housed in a Code Blue participating hotel. After normal business hours clients can seek assistance from any police department or any of the authorizing agencies listed below.

•Department of Mental Hygiene
•DSS Child and Adult Protective Services
•UPMC Hospital
•Brooks Hospital
•Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. – Mobile Crisis Team

Snob shaming—mocking those who strive for something better—hurts our communities. When someone proposes opening a boutique shop, renovating a building, or building quality apartments, they’re often met with ridicule instead of support. This mindset keeps towns stuck in mediocrity.

Wanting nicer things isn’t about elitism; it’s about pride in where we live. Renovating a building or opening a new business sends a message: “This place is worth investing in.” And when one person takes that leap, it often inspires others. Soon, empty storefronts fill, neighborhoods improve, and the entire community benefits. Studies even show that attractive, functional spaces reduce crime and boost quality of life.

The alternative? Settling for less. Mocking ambition ensures stagnation, driving away those who could bring energy and innovation. Instead of tearing down dreams, let’s celebrate them. Ambition isn’t the enemy; it’s the path to a more vibrant, welcoming town.

So next time someone proposes something bold, ask how it might make your community better. We all deserve beautiful, thriving places to live. Let’s stop snob shaming and start saying yes to progress.
