Miscellaneous Monday!

Back in April we had a Cardinal build a nest in our greenhouse. AND our Momma Cardinal had her baby on Saturday! Sadly we don't know if the other egg will make it, but Momma and Dad are doing a great job bringing food in for the baby.

"My Grandma Carolyn raised me, and she was a wonderful mix of head and heart. She was a wonderful homemaker and no-nonsense business owner. Grandma modeled balance and hard work to me. Growing up she regularly reminded me to be 'ladylike' which fit my memories of her sitting and polishing nails at the kitchen table. The shape her lipstick was took on a life of its own from her applying it (always a tube in her purse), and she taught me how to apply perfume--her signature scent was White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor. Grandma was poised, classy, and altogether lovely. She wasn't eh definition of a beauty on the outside but she was radiant from the inside! I never heard her speak ill of people, and she was the first to turn a mistake into a joke--bringing laughter into a situation. As a little girl I loved going through her jewelry drawer and wearing her jewelry. I received most of her jewelry when she passed, and still wear them proudly. I miss her cooking, especially her desserts; her peach cobbler was the best! As I reflect on who my Grandma was and what she instilled in me, it's to do what you are going to do to the best of your ability, like a lady, with laughter." "Adeline was a kind and wonderful grandmother--I was her only granddaughter. When I visited her home we would tend to her garden of vegetables and flowers. she also had a rock garden with rocks that were sparkly, and a bird bath that was encrusted with baubles, marbles and broken jewelry. I think this where I have gotten my love of things whimsical in my own flower gardens. Thank you, Grandma, for instilling your passion of whimsy in my life of creativity." "Plants and kids were two things you could always find when going to visit Lucia. She was a single mother of four with a green thumb like no other. In the summers when her kids were young, you could find all five of them outside in the sun--they would be running around all crazy, and she would have her hands in the dirt. She enjoys going for walks, picking wild flowers on the way, and she's been known to make a show-stopping flower crown! Lucia's caring and gentle personality is truly one of a kind." "Sheri--a lover of animals and flowers! She would take in any stray animal that her daughters brought home because they knew she couldn't say no. With her gardens and flowers she would name them after her family and loved ones to honor them. Besides her animals and flowers, she loves everything thrifted, and has a great eye for investment pieces. She has quite an eclectic collection of all things thrifted! She is truly a kid at heart--In the 80s she had a wind up toy collection that included over 100 pieces, believes in aliens, and is known to give gifts like a sock monkey along with a note that reminds her daughters to embrace the child in them." "Gwendolyn was such a kind and patient mother. She was a great cook and baker too. I remember when she would make hundreds of Christmas cookies, and people would request plates of these for their own celebrations. Her pies though were the best! She would make her own pie crusts with rich lard, fruit and cream fillings. Her homemade banana cream pie was famous at our home. In fact my husband and mother owned a diner on Main Street in the 70s. People would come in just to have a piece of her homemade pie. She taught me how to make her pies, which have been passed down to my friends and family members. "Tessie was very centered-calm and went her own way, and made an interesting life for herself. However, she didn't talk much about it. Her family were Quakers, and that maybe formed her character. She was a gardener, but more of a naturalist. We always took walks in the woods, and she would tell us about plants and rocks. She collected rocks (and a lot of other things); she made small houses out of stones and concrete--she had a village of them. "Visits from Grandma Bonnie always included a haircut. She ran a little beauty shop off the back of her house in Missouri. All the older ladies who would come get their curls 'set' for Sunday church were always jealous of my hair. My Grandpa had a large garden in the backyard and she always had lots of flowers, and bird baths, and of course, butterflies. It was a very special place to visit, as a city kid." This morning a female cardinal was trapped in our greenhouse, but once the roof retracted, she was able to fly free. Later on though she came back with him! Perhaps signs of Hope? Wisdom? Blessings?
