An update from John...

At peace.
Three short weeks ago I had another goal met. It wasn't under the most favorable circumstances, but non the less, it was attained. I drove the Chequamegon Queen II 325 miles north to the family property in Grand View. The same place I was last November deer hunting. A peaceful ride with Ken, a great friend I've become acquainted with through my cousin Margaret and her husband Jim. Going north is always very emotional to me. From excited to feeling my body release the tension and stress that would build up from work, or now from the ongoing battle that I've faced for the last two years. Cindy and Jessica always could tell when the switch would occur. It would happen around Highway 8, which runs across the state from the area in my case from Tomahawk to just south of Rice Lake through Barron (where my mother grew up). They dubbed it " the tension line". As we got closer to the North woods of Bayfield County the roads narrowed, traffic slowed, and the forest darkens and closes in on the blacktop ribbon as it meanders across streams, rivers, and around lakes. Turning onto the County trunk roads gives more smiles as we come closer to our destination, then onto the gravel fire lane that takes us back to the cabin. The pinging and clunking of the gravel off the underside of the truck becomes a soothing symphony announcing our arrival to the lake. We arrived just after noon, and by one o'clock I was pursuing my goal of making it down to the lake and fishing. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but number one I haven't fished that lake I grew up on for nearly twenty years, number two I had to maneuver down a slope of nearly 70 feet to the pier, and number three, I wasn't quite sure how I was going to cast my line in because of my issues with my hands. Well, I worked my way through it and even caught fish. I even was able to figure out how to tie hooks and lures with my damaged fingers. We were joined later that day by Margaret her two son-in-law her future son in law. The purpose of the trip wasn't just to go fishing, it was a memorial and the scattering of ashes of Margaret's husband, Jim. Jim was one of my strongest supporters through this. He often talked or texted me to find out how I was doing, and continued encouraging me with stories of what was happening at the lake and how they would get me back up there. My last conversation with Jim was the weekend I released my last post. He was at the cabin, readying things for the summer months, and getting the pier in the water. He posted two pictures of the Swamp by the boat landing, and of the pier looking out onto the lake. He and Margret had talked and made plans that he would retire this fall, sell their home and move to the cabin. That was on Sunday, I released my post on Monday night, titled "Dark Times", and tragically took his life Tuesday evening. Of everything I have gone through the last twenty months, this ripped at my very soul. I've tried to give Margaret and her girls a shoulder to lean on, an ear to bend, our just the family love that's needed, but I know it may not quite be enough. Ken and I talked extensively about it from time to time over the last few months and could never understand why, then again, the answer lies with Jim. He was the only one that had the answer, he was the only one that made that final decision. Sometimes I look at the battle I fought as an easy one. Every battle there was a downside, but the upside was "winning", or figuring ways to overcome that issue that was holding me back. I think we all in a way face some difficult times, some more than others, and I can honestly say, the thought of "ending it" can easily pop into our heads. Myself, I'm a thinker. I could have given up several times through this, but haven't. My thoughts range from whom I'm leaving behind, and how it would effect them, to all things happening around me I would miss. I guess I've looked at life like a book. Every paragraph, every page you turn, every chapter brings change. I look back at one year ago in February, I was laying flat on my back unable to move. I thought then I didn't want to live like that. I didn't want my family to go through having to visit me in a facility that had to clean me, feed me, and wait on my every need. Then, a turn of the page. Lifting me out of bed to a broda chair, to getting my legs to bend and gain strength, then to those few short steps. Had I given up, had I not hoped and strived for the future, I would have succumbed to failure, never had the opportunity for success in a different type of future. The drive for what ifs, and the desire to beat down the negative thoughts became greater with every goal met. All of you that have followed this journey, your kind responses and support have kept those spirits up and have helped me see the light in the darkest of times. There's always another side, a future to explore and conquer, and an opening for you to accept the love and support that surrounds us.
Hey, today I fished....
Never, EVER, give up!
Love you all!
John

Up date from John... April 30th. 2024

Dark days.
Everyone has them and needs to find ways to navigate them. I'm no different, and found myself fighting them this spring. Even though the weather has been decent, my progress continues to improve( just a bit slower) and many battles won over this turn of events in my life, I found my self many times in deep thought about where it's all headed. I think it actually started with me plowing through my medical files, researching the medical evaluations, how deadly each could have been and the likely recovery and life expectancy of each. Then at the end of February getting word from Social Security that they indeed found me permanently disabled. I was happy with the decision, but then started to ponder what it actually meant. I went from hell bent non stop work days of 14 to 18 hours, sometimes 7 days a week, to being worn out and weak after a walk down to the end of the driveway and back. I've been asked several times at where I thought I might be in percentage of where I was before all this happened and proudly boasted 60%, but looking back in comparison it's probably more like 35% to 40%. Now before you all remind me that I'm doing great, I don't disagree, it's just sometimes when you can't grasp a handle, or can't use a standard height toilet, or do simple everyday things, it gets to you, it's frustrating to say the least. I've tried and have done a good job in my opinion to avoid falling into a depressed or emotional state, but I've had my moments. Fortunately, I've learned to divert my attention and frustration when this occurs, and when the anxiety subsides to go back to it. It all goes back to acceptance, and learning to circumnavigate difficulties by understanding and creating new ways to accomplish old tasks. In all its a process we all must go through as we age, some more than others. Through all of this, it's spurred a house cleaning, recognizing things that I'll never use again, and listing them for sale. So far, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, w**d trimmers, rototiller, utility trailer and bicycles have left the compound. Many of these were suggested by my therapist. I guess the thought of falling or losing working digits was more of a concern to them rather than me, but I get it. I hesitated on the bikes and golf clubs, some of the things I hoped to do in retirement, but the damage done to my hands left me with the inability to grasp the clubs, and the fact my knees no longer bend more than 90° leaves me unable to rotate the crank on the bike, ( besides questionable balance).

On the bright side of this update, I'm spending more time outside. Cindy loves her flowers so we've spent the last two weeks getting her plants for her pots and patio. Last week we were "Amishing" in the Kingston Dalton area, checking on some things that she needs for planting. Not that they are any cheaper or better, just the fact we get away for a relaxing drive. She'll be hitting her favorite haunts around here for the majority of what she needs. This past weekend I've gotten back to gardening, learning how to plant things in my condition has been a challenge, but I've managed. Friday I planted over 150 onion sets, not too difficult other than taking time to rest my back and hands. What use to take 45 minutes now takes...... well more time, lots more. Yesterday I planted lettuce and kale. I had to turn to transplants because I can't handle the seeds. If I tried to "seed" plant lettuce...... it would be presumed that I ripped the top off the packet and dumped them on the ground.

I'll try beets and radishes later this afternoon. This weekend I plan on getting tomatoes and peppers. A few (well maybe 15) yeas back I built raised beds which I love, now I wish I had built them just a little higher. This will keep me occupied all summer and hopefully add some good physical and spiritual therapy.

On another note, I've been appointed to Jeffersons redevelopment council. I'm really excited about it. It not only gives me an opportunity to serve the community, but insight to new happenings. This position also gives me the ability to work on the cities historical preservation which is a passion of mine.

Oh, I have a new position at the bakery too, (I guess). I've accompanied Cindy on some deliveries. Puzzled as to why, I can't carry anything, and lifting is marginal, I was told I was to be the "door man". Opening the door to let them carry or roll in the food cabinets. Oh, well. Like they say. " when one door closes, another one opens..."

Never give up!
Love you all
John
