Merry Medieval Monday!

With our plans for Arkansas Revelry for Red Wolf Recovery things have gotten a bit hectic, but in the best way. We wanted to release an updated version of our park map with our new addition, the Village!

One day we would love to take over all of Craighead Forest Park, but it will take a village to get there. We truly want to see the community of Jonesboro be a part of this area as you are our Village. Booth reservations are only $20 per day for a 25 by 25 feet space with 5 feet between each space. We are still accepting applications!

Don't miss out on chances to hear us around Jonesboro or visit us at our public meeting on Monday, September 30th, 2024, in the North Room at the Earl Bell Community Center.

Expect paper mache mushrooms, flowers, stained glass windows, and so much more crafting fun! Sign up for the Red Wolf Renaissance Society to learn more using the application below. We will be getting that first order of membership cards out soon; we apologize for the wait.

We also have many contests that are still open! We will be evaluating fair royalty this week while these contests will be announced at our awards ceremony on Sunday at 4 pm. Trophies will be awarded for our first-place winners while second and third receive a medal in recognition. The deadline has been extended to October 6th, 2024, check out the application link below!

Together, we can make this year’s fair amazing and help support the recovery of the Red Wolf! 🐺

The USFWS has confirmed five pups were lost in the wild Red Wolf population. The Milltail pack lost their father due to a vehicular collision and the mother of the pups wasn't able to provide for them on her own.
Please donate to the Wildlife Crossing Fund from the Center for Biological Diversity if you can. Six Red Wolves have been killed by vehicle accidents in the last year alone. Visit saveredwolves.org for more information!

Heartbreaking news: 5 endangered red wolf pups have died after their father was killed by a vehicle strike, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed today.

Red wolves are monogamous and mate for life, and both parents participate in caring for their pups. After the death of her partner, Chance — the mother of the pups — was likely unable to feed and care for her pups by herself.

5 other red wolves have been killed by cars in the past year. Now, less than 20 of these animals are left in the wild. Vehicle collisions have become the leading cause of mortality for red wolves.

That's why the Center and partners are leading a campaign to build wildlife crossings in the heart of red wolves' habitat. You can help be part of the solution to save the last remaining red wolves ➡️ https://biodiv.us/3zk5UH6

Great update from the Red Wolf Coalition. Keep your paws crossed for the Milltail pack! 🐾

REALITY CHECK

Based on the comment thread on the post with the USFWS announcement, some clarifications are needed. Thanks to our smart and savvy supporters and red wolf advocates for your concerns, which we share!

Yesterday's announcement on the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program website references TWO red wolf pup litters. The FIRST litter of 5 was fathered by a red wolf male killed on Hwy 64. The mother red wolf was (is) very young. Experienced single parents can sometimes raise pups alone once the pups are weaned. This mother was not experienced, however. Why did the USFWS Recovery Team not "rescue" the pups? These were wild born pups. They would have needed to be hand-raised if they were removed from the wild. Red wolf pups are never hand-raised by humans for all the reasons we have posted over the years. HOWEVER! The Recovery Team biologists searched for several days to try to find those pups, to no avail. It was heartbreaking for the field team.

The SECOND litter referenced in the announcement refers to the 8 pups born in April 2024 to the resident Milltail pack. In mid-June, the youngsters were 8 weeks old and doing fine. Concern now is over the fact that these pups (now 5 months old) have not been seen on trail cams or with "eyes-on" sightings. Typically, they would be traveling with the adults as they learn to hunt. They are not wearing tracking collars yet, so their whereabouts cannot be confirmed. We are keeping all paws crossed that they are simply choosing to stay in dense foliage and that the reason they have not been sighted also has to do with the Recovery Team's efforts not to disturb the wolf family and influence their movements.

QUESTIONS on this and on other pages:

1. Why don't they move the wolves to another recovery site?

Alternative reintroduction sites do need to be considered, Alligator River (ARNWR) is a wildlife refuge, not a national park. ARNWR has a heavy human footprint - agriculture, regulated hunting seasons for a variety of small and large game, roads, and lots of visitors and photographers, some of whom have encroached on the red wolves' space without regard to their welfare. Additional restoration sites must take into consideration, but the challenges are daunting and include resistance from humans and the presence of large numbers of coyotes everywhere in the East.

2. Does the Red Wolf Recovery Program need new management?

In a word, NO. The Recovery Team field biologists based in northeastern NC work 7 days a week, night and day, to restore wild red wolves and to keep them safe. They are wildlife management heroes.

3. Are red wolves under consideration for delisting?

NO! GRAY wolves are. But not the reds. They are fully protected under the Endangered Species Act.

An update after the post regarding Red Wolf pup deaths. Hopefully, the red wolf pups are within their range and still thriving.

"The Milltail litter, born to 2225F and 2191M in April, has not been definitively detected and identified during monitoring with remote sensing cameras, tracking and visual observation since late June. Their known activity areas were buffered from management activities during that time. Monitoring will continue throughout their home range. No pup mortalities have been documented, however, pups approaching 5 months old are typically moving throughout the family group’s home range with the adults and being seen on remote sensing cameras." According to the Red Wolf Recovery Program under the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

We sincerely apologize for any confusion and hold out hope for a positive update from the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program.

FROM THE USFWS RED WOLF RECOVERY PROGRAM WEBSITE:
https://www.fws.gov/project/red-wolf-recovery-program

September 2024
"Monitoring has indicated that the litter born to 2413F and 2444M, unfortunately, did not survive after the mortality of 2444M on Highway 64 in early June. Pup survival is always a concern after the mortality of one of the breeding pair, particularly red wolves with their first litter, such as was the case with this pair.

In mid-June, 2499M was detected as a mortality during tracking and monitoring. Radio collars have a mechanism that changes the signal transmitted when the collar has not moved for a specified period of time, which we hear when they are being actively tracked. The cause of death is unknown at this time, and his mortality is currently under investigation.

The Milltail litter, born to 2225F and 2191M in April, has not been definitively detected and identified during monitoring with remote sensing cameras, tracking and visual observation since late June. Their known activity areas were buffered from management activities during that time. Monitoring will continue throughout their home range. No pup mortalities have been documented, however, pups approaching 5 months old are typically moving throughout the family group’s home range with the adults and being seen on remote sensing cameras."

A WORD TO OUR SUPPORTERS AND TO ALL RED WOLF ADVOCATES regarding the Milltail pack: Speculation that the worst has occurred with the five-month-old pups is growing and spreading on social media. This is understandable, but it isn't helpful because there is no concrete evidence that those pups are not alive and thriving. They are NOT YET TRACKING COLLARED like the adults are, so there is no way to know. Please, let's all try to stay positive until we get another update from the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program.

Fare Thee Well, Red Wolf Week!

To celebrate the conclusion of , we are thrilled to announce that the Endangered Wolf Center will be hosting a virtual Q&A about Red Wolves to kick off our Red Wolf Renaissance Fair!

The Endangered Wolf Center is an organization located in Eureka, Missouri, dedicated to the conservation and recovery of various endangered wolf species, including the Mexican Gray Wolf and the American Red Wolf. Through their captive Red Wolf population and conservation efforts, they raise awareness about the plight of the Red Wolf while playing a direct role in safeguarding the future of this critically endangered species.

Join us at our main stage at 10 am on Saturday, October 12th to learn more about this critically endangered species. Under our mantra of Arkansas Revelry for Red Wolf Recovery, we are committed to ensuring carryover funds raised during our fair support the American Red Wolf Conservation and Research Center initiative at Craighead Forest Park, where secure fenced habitats for 12 or more red wolves will be established or to benefit a Red Wolf-affiliated nonprofit.
