🌿 PLANT OF THE WEEK 🌿
Moth Orchids (Phalaenopsis Orchids)
Family: Orchidaceae (or-kid-day-see-ay)
Scientific Name: Phalaenopsis spp. (fal-a-nop-sis)

Fun Facts:
Moth orchids, much like 70% of all species of orchid, are epiphytes! Meaning they grow on the surface of other plants like trees in their home of Southeast Asia and Australia. There are over 70 types of moth orchids, and over 25,000 species of orchids in the orchid family. There are even 57 species of orchids that call Michigan home! While some species of moth orchids bear no scent, some bear unique scents that are most aromatic in the morning hours. Some species have typical floral scents but can range from orange peel, cilantro, grape soda, and even smoky bacon!

Care:
Many sources will encourage you to water with ice cubes. While this can work in the short term, soaking your orchid is the recommended form of watering. Soak your orchid or run it under a slow faucet for 5-10 minutes. Avoid distilled or salt softened water. The majority of orchids do not prefer to be planted in a soil medium. Pot your orchid in a well drained orchid pot with sphagnum moss or a chunky premade orchid bark mix. Ensuring flowering on your orchid requires at least 6 hours of indirect light (preferably from an eastern or southern window) and to fertilize when dormant biweekly in the Summer months (May-October) and monthly in the Winter months (November-April)

🌿PLANT OF THE WEEK🌿
Poinsettia (Lobster Flower, Flame Leaf Flower)
Family: Euphorbia
Scientific name: Euphorbia pulcherrima (you-for-bee-uh pull-chur-ee-muh)

Fun Facts:
In their native habitat of Mexico and Central America, poinsettias are shrubs or small trees that can grow to be 10-15 feet tall
The colorful portion of the poinsettia are not petals, but actually a structure called a bract, and the small and unassuming flower can be seen in the center of these bracts
Poinsettias are green for the majority of the year, and begin to produce their flowers and iconic red bracts in response to the longer nights of the winter month

Care:
Water your poinsettia when the first 1-3 inches of soil has dried out. Poinsettias are very sensitive to excessive moisture and can develop root rot if kept too wet.
Poinsettias thrive in humidity of 40-70% and require a minimum of 6 hours of sun a day.
After the holidays, your poinsettia will start to lose its leaves starting in March-April. After this occurs, cut back the plant about ⅓, keeping a couple leaves and reduce its watering and fertilizing schedule until the Summer. Prune again in late July if desired.
Your poinsettia will initially come back with green leaves, but beginning in October will start to develop those iconic red bracts just in time for the holidays.

Norfolk pine (Star pine, Polynesian Pine)
Family: Araucariaceae (are-uh-car-ee-ace-ee-aye)
Scientific name: Araucaria heterophylla

Fun Facts:
Norfolk pines are endemic to Norfolk Island off the coast of Australia, meaning that they do not naturally grow anywhere else in the world.
The mature height for a wild Norfolk pine can reach up to 200 feet tall, and their trunks can be as much as 10 feet wide!
Despite being a “pine”, Norfolk pines are tropical trees, and cannot survive temperatures below freezing.

Care:
Norfolk pines prefer moist soil, but do not tolerate being wet for too long. Give this plant a deep watering whenever the first inch or two of the soil feels dry.
Low light is not ideal for Norfolk pines, and they will struggle without bright indirect light. If outside in the warmer months, place somewhere ideally with morning sun.
Norfolk pines can be kept outside until nighttime temperatures reach below 50 degrees.
Fertilize in the Spring and Summer months once a month with a general fertilizer

Thanksgiving cactus/Christmas cactus
Family: Cactaceae
Scientific Name: Schlumbergera truncata/bridgesii

Fun Facts:
Despite being a cactus, this plant calls the tropical rainforests of Brazil its home
Christmas cactus are what are called “epiphytic”, meaning that they grow on other plants, usually the crevices and bark of large trees
Blooming is triggered on Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti from longer and cooler nights, and the blooming typically lasts for 4-6 weeks

Care:
Water this plant when the soil feels dry to the touch. They can tolerate some drought, but do not handle soggy conditions well, especially during the winter months
Feed with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season (while the plant is not blooming) to encourage blooms
Christmas cactus are not like other desert cactus that require large amounts of light, and perform the best in bright indirect light

Wedel's Garden Supply is thrilled to be partnering with Twelve Baskets Food Pantry this holiday season. They rely on the support of the community to serve those in need. Twelve Baskets Food Pantry serves many families experiencing food insecurity, providing them with a cart of miscellaneous food products, including meat and fresh produce (as available). Families can register twice a month, and the pantry recently served a record-breaking 387 families. However, this success comes with the challenge of keeping an inventory of healthy food products to build hope, dignity, and self-respect in the community.
