Perennial (rarely biennial or annual) herbaceous plants or subshrubs or shrubs 3–300 cm tall. They mostly have long or short rhizomes, rarely a caudex. Stems are mostly erect or ascending, rarely decumbent. Leaves alternate, rarely opposite. Small flowers in single or panicled baskets with a tile wrapper. Marginal flowers ligulate, blue or purple, fertile; middle ones are tubular, usually yellow. All asters have star-like flowers with yellow (sometimes reddish) centers and outer rays (not petals) of different shapes, white, pink, purple, blue or purple colors, and of different sizes.
