The centerpiece of Beckendorff Farms is a 160 year-old antique timber frame barn. Originally constructed in Ohio in the 1850’s, the barn was one of four antique timber frame barns ever known to have been built with a “double-canted queen post” roof system. This extremely rare design (combined with massive 60’ oak tie beams) allowed the barn to span 50% wider than other barns built during its era.
For the first 150 years of its life, the barn was the centerpiece for generations of family farming operations. Though its primary role related to agriculture, it was also used to host countless social functions. Historical records indicate that, from 1859-1898, the barn was used by the German Baptist Brethren Church to host its most holy celebration (a two day ritual known as the “Love Feast”). Historical sources also indicate that the barn was likely used to shelter slaves using the “Underground Railroad.”
The modernization of agriculture practices during the 20th century significantly reduced the functionality of antique timber frame barns and, as a result, many fell into disrepair and eventually collapsed. Of the limited number still standing, many are now being “parted-out” to satisfy the massive increase in demand for reclaimed barn wood. Fortunately, the Raber family believed that this barn – which had served its family dairy operation since 1939 – deserved a better fate.
In 2013, the Raber family entrusted us to provide a more fitting retirement for the barn. An expert timber framing crew was brought in to carefully dismantle the barn and transport it to Beckendorff Farms where it was re-erected and meticulously restored to its former glory. Standing in Katy, Texas today, the barn is the largest antique timber frame barn in the state of Texas and the only remaining double-canted queen post barn known to exist in America.
