Whiteface Mountain was the alpine ski venue for the 1980 Winter Olympics from February 14 to February 23. The Olympic downhill and giant slalom racecourses finished at the 1,600-foot-level chairlift tower 10 area. The downhill length was one and nine-tenths of a mile, with a vertical drop of one-half mile. This was the first games to use machine-made snow.
