It was a good season in the first year seedling patch, and this sweet patootie always caught my eye with those soft yellow and rose tones.

A beautiful little first year dahlia seedling from my attempt to breed fully closed decorative dahlias with the cool little petaloids that you see on collarette dahlia blooms.

Bell’s La Peche Mode holds steady through the summer with her soft, creamy peach tones, a picture of composure even in the peak of the season. But as the season’s end creeps closer, she has a little fun, tossing out the occasional darker petals— just to make sure she’s getting the attention she deserves.

I tend to go quiet on social media over the winter, but my phone is packed with beautiful dahlia pictures—and who am I to keep all that beauty to myself? So, this winter, I’m going to try sharing a daily dahlia photo to brighten things up. I’ll admit, I’m consistently inconsistent, so I might miss a day or two, but I’ll give it my best shot.

This little stunner is a first year seedling - we might never see her again, or she might become my favorite new dahlia if she survives the winter. Fingers crossed for the latter 🤞🏻

These two dahlias, from the exact same parents are both beautiful, but as different as night and day - a colorful testament to the wild diversity hidden in their genetics. Unlike us humans, with our tidy two sets of chromosomes, dahlias are octoploids - working with eight full sets. This gives them a vast palette to play with, producing siblings that range from subtle and subdued to loud and vibrant. It’s a nice reminder that nature thrives on variety and sometimes offers beauty in sweet little surprises.

Scroll along to the last 2 pictures for the parents.

Well, it finally happened - It’s the rarest moment of beauty in the garden, when there’s enough light to see the killing frost, but not quite enough to melt it.

Pinky, white and blush tones from the breeding patch.

A cool little selection of 1st to 4th year dahlias that bring a smile to my face whenever I’m around them - and hopefully, someday lots of others too when it comes time to share them.
