The Nootka lupine is common on the west coast of North America, and is one of the species from which the garden hybrids are derived, being valued in Britain and other North-European countries for its tolerance of cool, wet summers. In North America, it grows along roadsides, gravel bars, and forest clearings from the Aleutian Islands and Southcentral Alaska, and along the Alaskan panhandle to British Columbia. Rigorous self-seeders as they are, lupine can often be seen along roadsides and in open meadows, their bright blueish purple flowers catching ones eye from quite a distance. Their long tap roots make transplanting difficult, so sowing seed is preferable.

Great Day in Homer Alaska today❀️🩢🩢The Homer Spit is a long, narrow finger of land jutting 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay. Dotted with businesses, the area caters to visitors and provides numerous recreation opportunities, from fishing and beachcombing to shopping and boating. With glacier-studded mountains and crystal-clear water surrounding you, the tiny businesses and miles of beaches that make up the Spit also make for one of Homer's most beautiful features. Take long walks, take photos, check out the boats returning with their huge catches, or cast a line for salmon yourself at The Fishin' Hole-located near the boat harbor-which is stocked with kings and silvers. Test out your sea legs with a fishing charters for halibut and salmon, head out on a guided sea kayaking or stand-up paddleboard trip, or hop a ferry across the bay to the quaint boardwalk-lined town of Halibut Cove. The Spit also offers some of the best eagle viewing in the state - up to several hundred during certain times of the year! Extreme low tides (say a minus-15 foot) expose interesting sub-sea flora and fauna on beaches and harbor piers.

At the Harbor, you can take a walking or boat tour with guides who know the boats and their histories and functions. Many of the boats belong to commercial fishermen and fishing charter operators and there are also a great number of pleasure sail and motor boats, which come and go throughout the summer. The Harbor Master's office has a harbor map with the names of all the boats and their functions as well as owners. Just observing the creative names people have given their pet boats is a fun pastime. Www.alaska.org

Super early road trip to Homer to catch super low tide at the harbor. Found a magical forest of sea stars, barnacles, kelp and exposed pylons with screaming seagulls above me.

Starfish or sea stars are star-shaped echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea (/ˌæstΙ™ΛˆrΙ”ΙͺdiΙ™/). Common usage frequently finds these names being also applied to ophiuroids, which are correctly referred to as brittle stars or basket stars. Starfish are also known as asteroids due to being in the class Asteroidea. About 1,900 species of starfish live on the seabed in all the world's oceans, from warm, tropical zones to frigid, polar regions. They are found from the intertidal zone down to abyssal depths, at 6,000 m (20,000 ft) below the surface. The tough integument or outer covering of some sea stars keeps them from drying out. Some sea stars can stay out of water for 50 hours. They can also regenerate lost arms, so they can continue their predatory life style. Some, like sea stars, cling fast to the rocky surfaces; others find shelter in crevices or hide under thick mats of seaweed when the tide is outSome, like sea stars, cling fast to the rocky surfaces; others find shelter in crevices or hide under thick mats of seaweed when the tide is outπŸͺΈπŸ¦€πŸ™πŸͺΌπŸͺΈ

Tern Lake and Cooper Landing. The Tern Lake area hosts a myriad of animals, birds, fish and unique plants. Carnivorous sundew plants, bog rosemary and cottongrass grace the floating mats of vegetation in the lake. Common loons, bald eagles, and arctic terns share the area with a variety of song birds and shorebirds like the northern waterthrush, golden-crowned sparrow and the greater yellowlegs. Beavers, river otters, muskrats and salmon ply the cold, clear waters of Tern Lake. Moose, Dall's sheep and mountain goats can be seen on the surrounding mountains.

Ice is steadily disappearing on Kenai Lake.🩡Kenai Lake is a large, "zig-zag" shaped lake on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. The lake forms the headwaters of the Kenai River, and is itself a destination for fishing and other outdoor activity. The Dena'ina call the lake Sqilan Bena, meaning "ridge lake place".
