Now that the school year has begun, birthday parties have, too. 🥳🧁🎉
For younger kids, I love a good craft, maybe a bit of dress up or costume, and gross motor movement and snacks are an absolute must.

For my daughter's 5th birthday at we made fairy crowns and wands, each child received wings and fairy face paint, and then they ran and ran and ran between "fairy rings" toss, "bugs and beetles" tic tac toe, "frogs and toads" in the (corn)hole, "popping dewdrops" bubbles, and a whole spread of favorite snacks. There was also a barn cat hunt somewhere in the mix, poor thing. 🧚‍♀️🍄🌿🐸🫧🎨🪲🐞😿

Here's a hot tip that has landed me incredible venues for a bargain time and again: Think a little outside the box to identify a space that could work, ask if they will book an event outside of their usual event type and outside of their usual event booking window, try to require as little as possible from venue staff, and take a leave-no-trace approach when you depart. This time it was March, when our yard was still a mess from a hard winter and my husband was heading in for knee surgery, so getting our house in partying shape seemed out of reach. I called , a stunning wedding venue in Cape Neddick with *big* and super magical fairyland vibes, and started the conversation with "I know this sounds insane because you're a beautiful wedding venue, but would you be open to renting your space out for a 5th birthday party?" Laura, owner, responded "Oh, we've never done a kid's birthday, but I love them! Let's give it a try!". I braced for a price that was way out of budget, but because it was several weeks before the first wedding would be hosted, because I assured Laura I would take care of everything, and likely because it was her first kid's birthday, she quoted a price that was no different than a bounce house rental or trip to a typical kid party venue. Two months later and the most magical birthday came to life! The only downside is that my poor kid has now arguably peaked on the birthday celebration front at 5 and everything will be a disappointment going forward. Also, meet my best girl and favorite Queen of the Fairies, Noelle. She is the little white light of my life. ✨

When the moon hits your eye like...this two tiered Italian snacky tray, that's amore! This was made for a 3rd birthday pizza party with the adults in attendance in mind -- peaches with prosciutto and balsamic glaze, mozzarella and tomato with nut-free pesto, salami, grapes, truffle cheese, mini crostini made with garlic and cheese bread sticks, picante peppers and cream cheese, and white bean and feta dip, pesto, and olive tapenade for dipping sauces. Someone damn near killed me with flattery when she asked if I was a chef, but I assure you I am not. What I am is someone who can lean into a great theme with a solid mix of homemade bites and exciting store bought items. ✨

We were discussing how to celebrate milestone birthdays yesterday. I have another year until my next (40!), but if you asked me today I would say a garden party with a Midsummer Night's Dream vibe would be the way to go -- all the flowers, little white lights, fancy cocktails, tasty bites, a great playlist...and a long, loose fitting dress and sandals because I'm choosing comfort these days and not sorry about it. And these incredible brass vases from , whose mission is to make sustainable living simple and convenient (which feels like a message on how to gracefully age, too), would be right in the mix to make it all shine. ✨

I wasn't sure about posting this one because, at the time, I was more focused on the favorite snacks of the graduate than I was aesthetics, but I think it's the perfect example of what I am here for -- to take some of the work off the host's plate so they can enjoy the parts of the celebration that are important to them. And when you're the Mom of an 18 year old who will be off to college in a matter of weeks, you want to spend your time with your daughter, being present, and making the most of each moment. You want to have a party to celebrate her accomplishments -- and let's be honest, you deserve to celebrate raising a whole human, too! -- but you don't want to waste a minute of the precious time you have left with her running all the errands and prepping all the food and doing all the set up, instead.

I have almost two decades of experience in creating memorable moments for guests, brands, and clients and in building community and purpose through events and celebrations, so I have you covered there. But to be clear, my mission is to make sure you, as a host, are having the best time and getting the most out of the moment, first and foremost, because you are doing really important work and deserve to enjoy it. ✨

I had a great date with yesterday. We talked about how important this work is and how much the invisible labor of women has given to it, and because of that, how it is so easily cheapened to being labeled as frivolous or unnecessary or excessive.

But creating these moments for people to gather in celebration or community, by elevating the occasion to signal that something special and memorable is happening, and by showing our people and causes how worthy they are and how much they mean to us by putting in the extra effort -- it is critical to how we create culture, build social capital, nurture and shape traditions, and bring art into the every day. The pandemic taught us a lot about what shapes the kind of society that we don't just survive in, but thrive in, and the loss of these celebrations and gatherings was some of the hardest to endure. I'm so glad we have them back.

This spread is from our very first post-pandemic celebration of my daughter's 3rd birthday -- her favorite song was and still is Buffalo Soldier, so we threw a Bob Marley bash for her and threw a few plays of Three Little Birds onto the playlist as well. 🇯🇲✨
