We’re so excited to serve y’all our take on the traditional New Year’s Meal. We all know that eating black eyed peas on New Years Day brings good luck but do you know the reasons for the other items on your plate?
For example, the more pork you have on your plate, the more luck and prosperity you will have in the coming year.
In our meal, there’s a generous serving of pork tenderloin, hog jowl in the peas, pork broth, country ham, & hog jowl in the turnip greens, and bacon & smoked sausage in the sautéed cabbage & sauerkraut. Pork is also supposed to inspire progress throughout the year to come.
The peas, greens, and cornbread all represent money and wealth. The peas are said to represent “coins” while the greens represent “folded money” and the cornbread represents gold. These three are supposed to be eaten together to bring wealth. Because something this tasty has to bring fortune!
In this meal, we have the peas and cornbread and then the three greens; turnip, cabbage, & kraut.
Our Vegan Rice Bowl borrows an Asian New Year tradition; rice. Rice symbolizes fertility and wealth. In this bowl there’s also black eyed peas, baby spinach, kale & cabbage. Getting the pork in this dish is obviously not happening but I added vegan Italian “sausage” and vegan bacon seasoning. That works right? 😂 This meal will be served with vegan Cornbread, we have a feeling this rice bowl will do the trick!
One of the lesser known traditions is serving round cake or other circular sweets. They signify the full circle of life to lucky eaters. We have our Champagne Cupcakes and our Boozy Rum Cake. I took it a step further and created a special glaze for the rum cakes. The glaze is made with orange zest, dark wildflower honey, & pomegranate juice. In Asian cultures, eating oranges with honey on New Years Day will bring good fortune, wealth, and money. Pomegranates & seeds symbolize fertility, life, and abundance. I have made both regular and Gluten-free rum cakes so everyone can enjoy this yummy tradition.
We hope everyone has a prosperous, lucky, wealthy, & Happy New Year!!!
I would also like to thank everyone who has come to support our food truck this past year, helping make my dream become a reality. Thank you.. 💖
Here’s to the new year, a year filled with love, happiness, friends & family, peace, kindness, and lots of delicious food! Love you all!! 😘 ~Lauren
