I’m not the only one in the family with a green thumb. I snapped a few photos of my mother-in-law’s flowers at her house. She has an incredible hosta collection. Unfortunately they are quite damaged this year from branches that came down in the tornado. 😞. Let Jean know how gorgeous her flowers are!!

There's something truly magical about cutting flowers on a summer night here, especially when the air is thick with humidity and the cicadas are singing their sweet songs. The flowers are simply stunning, and the heat of the night only adds to the enchantment. If you'd like to experience this for yourself, please message or text me to arrange a visit to the farm (by appointment only), or to order a custom bouquet for yourself! I have porch pick up at the farm or in Princeville, Illinois.

If you would like to come to the farm to pick your own bouquet(s)? Please text me (309-525-0033) or message me to make an appointment. I will allow a limited number of guests. I would be happy to show you how to make a spiral bouquet, or you can wander and take selfies/photos. Please understand this is a very old farm, and my flower beds are not designed for public U-pick. I have a release of liability that you will need to sign once per season before visiting.

There are no public bathrooms, the ground is uneven and our gardens naturally have tripping hazards. We have Corgi dogs that will bark and greet you, and livestock smells. The barns are off limits. Just letting ypu know!

Thank you to everyone that purchased a bouquet from us today at the Kewanee Farmer’s Market! I truly appreciate your support of my locally grown flowers! Thanks to my sister, Ruth, and Tyler and Katie, for helping me set up and tear down.

I hope more people take the time to attend this little gem and to grow it even bigger. I know a lot of people come to Kewanee on Saturday mornings to do their shopping, and I really encourage you to head uptown to the corner of Tremont and Third Street, right by the Amtrak Station, for some locally grown produce, flowers, and baked goods and houseplants!

My $20 this morning bought me:

1 large bag of the most beautiful kale
1 bunch of Swiss chard
1 quart of strawberries
1 large bag homemade doggie treats
Two homemade bagels

What’s blooming this week at Windy Hill Farm 1852? Snapdragons. Old-fashioned Stock (the scent is dreamy). A few peonies are left. Fluttery orlaya. Peach roses! A very few ranunculus are left.

Private Message or text me to place an order. Tell me your budget and I’ll accommodate. Porch pick up Monday evening, or at Princeville.

Im taking a poll:

I have quite a few early snapdragons, peonies, and orlaya, and I’m starting to get stock. These make gorgeous spring bouquets!

Would you rather:

Visit the Windy Hill Farm Est. 1852 farm and make your own bouquet on our porch,

Or

Pick up a pre-made bouquet?

Or

I’m also considering letting a small number of friends, and acquaintances visit the farm and cut their own flowers. Price would be 50 cents/stem.

What are your thoughts? What would you prefer?!

This is my third year increasing my dahlia stock through cuttings. My advice to everyone is to watch the Kristine Albrecht YouTube videos! There is also great information for breeding dahlias in her book. My dahlia seedlings are just starting to germinate.

Last year we planted 400 tubers and cuttings. Anyone want to guess how many we will plant this year? (Not counting the seedlings I hand crossed last year) post your guess below!!

I couldn’t do this cut flower farm side hustle without the help of my love, Burt! Today we planted roses, stock, and I planted more seeds inside. We already have 4 low tunnels filled with Lisianthus, stock, snapdragons, and ranunculus!

I will have bouquets available as early as June!

For now, I have dahlia tubers available for sale!

Happy New Year! I hope and pray that 2024 brings good things to you and your family and friends. What are your goals for the new year?

Burt and I don’t usually set formal resolutions (except for two years ago when we made some major health changes). However I do plan to make more time to spend with family and friends this year.

Speaking of changes, I just started a new job! After 21 years at my local John Deere dealer, I accepted a position with the USDA! I look forward to serving my farming community in this new role!

With so much to look forward to this year,
January 1, 2024 seemed like the perfect day to begin my growing season. I’m planting my first succession of Lisianthus seeds. Lisi’s are very slow growing. These will be transplanted outside under low tunnel row covers in March. It’s good to get my hands back in some dirt!

Flower Bouquet CSA Subscriptions are available for sale on my NEW website!

- Four (4) weekly bouquets beginning approx. the first week of July, August, or September- you choose - members receive an email 1-2 weeks before the first pickup

If you are seeing the acronym “CSA” for the first time, you are probably wondering what exactly it is. In short, it is similar to a subscription.

Our CSA (subscription) program provides an opportunity for you, the community, to invest financially in our farm at the beginning of a growing season when sales are typically at their lowest and our operating costs at their highest. The commitment of your share helps me purchase inputs like seeds, bulbs, and supplies before my growing season starts.

To purchase, please go to my website and choose Shop, Subscriptions, and then choose the month you prefer. I have a limited number available, and you can choose from Sunday Kewanee farm pick up or Monday Princeville Nutrien pick up. Message me with any questions!

And that’s a wrap! Cut flower growing season #2 is over. I’ll share my thoughts on the past year in a later post, but tonight I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for the enormous amount of support I received from my friends and from nearby communities. I’m thankful for each and every one of you. I hopeI brought a smile, a sparkle, and a little bit of joy into your life this year. Stay tuned for an announcement about new plans and ideas coming for the 2024 growing season. Hint: it’s something you can give as a Christmas gift!

Below is a big bouquet I made out of the dahlias we dug up today, and a photo of Cafe Au Lait dahlias being stored for the winter.
