Last Friday the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys held their Unsung Heroes luncheon. Christa Varacalli was our Garden Club hero. She is an integral part of our outreach and communication. She manages our website, social media and membership. She is hands on in the propagation area and is a perfectly organized multi-tasker. We are so lucky to have her in our midst.

Jeff and Rosi are both Key West Garden Club members.

This is the story of Rosi’s first two years of rehabilitation after an AVM brain bleed stroke. Its content is based on regular emails that were sent out to around 100 friends who asked to be kept updated on her progress. Many recipients of the emails suggested that their content be shared with the world, especially with others that had or were going through similar experiences. On one level the book is a caregiver and survivors’ guide to what they might expect to experience as the recovery process takes its natural journey forward. On another level it’s just a love story.

It was a beautiful evening at the West Martello - Fred Borch delivered an enlightening presentation on the Lincoln assasination and its connection to Key West. I think everyone there learned something new and understood a bit more clearly why knowing the history of our country is critical to our perspective on the present.

Afterwards we had wine and lovely snacks to accompanythe gorgeous surroundings. That might be a meteor in the center of the first picture.

Monday morning in the garden - the cool weather agrees with many of our plants. From orchids to succulents and beyond, they are all rejuvenated by temps in the 60s after a brutally hot summer.
