Go Tom! First bar muscle up!
Congratulations to our TWO CrossFit Quarterfinals athletes!
Matt is a long time athlete pushing himself to see what his full mental and physical potential are, while building his professional career.
Nick is a coach, teacher and family man whose consistent effort pays off with continued improvement. A Renaissance Man by nature, he not only gets it done, but he gets it done well!
Best of luck in the next stage of the competition!
Meet a Member Monday- Sibling Edition: Nicole and Mike!
The Fuocos! I've known these two since they were in high school, and when I don't mind feeling old, I remember that I was actually Nicole's 9th grade English teacher during my second year teaching. Although pretty quiet then, her powerhouse potential was pretty clear. And as for Mikey, my memory of him was a sports-loving little heart-throb of Kingston High School. Having watched them grow up into amazing adults and having them walk into our gym has been nothing short of an honor. I was expecting more of a competitive rivalry here, but I was also excited to see that they went easy on each other during the interview.π€£
βοΈNicole- 30 years old, teacher of business and marketing at Valley Central High School, frequent flyer at KA
βοΈMike- 26 years old, guidance counselor at Valley Central, also a frequent flyer at KA- although he admits to coming in late with a coffee in hand
βοΈNicole joined KA in July of 2017 after she became bored with her routine and after her gym closed. She only committed for a month at first because she was unsure about the whole Crossfit thing, but the love for the hard work quickly had her signing up for a full year after that.
βοΈMike joined KA a year or two later and was a little afraid of the "cult" reputation of Crossfit. He loved the sense of community and how everyone has each other's back, and very much let go of the "culty thoughts." Thank goodness!
βοΈNicole gets DEEP into what Crossfit has taught her. She talks about the confidence that she's gained at the gym, and she's been able to bring that with her into every aspect of her life. She looks at the whiteboard as an agenda of accomplishments, things she's been able to "check off." She's taken that mentality to check off some MAJOR goals in life like getting a Master's degree. NBD!ππ
βοΈMike says Crossfit has helped him keep his competitive edge, even if it's just to beat his sister's times.
Meet a Member Monday... an edition so special that we waited until Tuesday!
If you haven't already had the opportunity, meet Ron!
Many know Ron as one of the four owners of Kingston Athletics, but not everyone might know that he started out as a member, himself. I wanted to do a tribute to him, active military members, and all veterans, but I'm having trouble finding the right words to do this man (and all of our heroes) justice. His interview just left me speechless (and that's rare... just ask Nick!). Ron is one of the most passionate and hard-working men I know, he's no bullsh*t, and on top of everything, but he might be the most humble man alive. Working with him as a business partner is a pleasure, and having him in our lives as a mentor is a true honor for our family. He's a gift to everyone around him.
βοΈRon- father, partner, dog-dad to Jasper, gym owner, decorated veteran, age intentionally undisclosed π€£
βοΈRon joined the gym way back when it was on Ulster Avenue as Crossfit Ulster after hearing some lieutenants chatting at a unit meeting about their awesome workout. He followed them to the gym, and never looked back. In fact, when the opportunity presented itself, he jumped at the chance to join Sean in ownership. Three locations later, now we are growing together.
βοΈCrossfit has been a great transition for him from the military because it gave him the chance to still lead and coach while still improving his own health.
βοΈRon says that fitness goals are always about improving and moving forward, and he's even recently started doing Muay Thai with Chris Mauceri (how cool is that?!)
βοΈRon was actually in the military for over 30 years, but his age is still undisclosedπ€£. He was in Iraq for a year where he led troops in combat and viewed that as an opportunity to do his part. His entire unit made it back home- together, alive and well, and I can only imagine this was largely due to Ron's incredible skills.
