We just saw the Columbus Ship the Pinta going up the river on It's way to Lenior City TN for a few days. Then on Nov 3rd it will be docked in Chattanooga. Back on Sept 30th 2019 we met them out in the lake and gave them some River Road Grillbillies BBQ for dinner. You don't realize how small they really were and that they could sail across the ocean.

Returned home to Kingston, TN after making the trek down to the Honeybee Festival - LaFayette, GA. This is a fantastic street festival that has lots of music, many vendors and a huge turnout, all while hosting a BBQ competition. Organizer Chris Finkbone and the whole support team did a great job.

This was our fourth competition of the year and hopefully we have shaken off some of the dust and rust from the winter layoff. We were excited to hear River Road Grillbillies name called four times with a 4th place chicken, 7th place ribs, 10th place pork, resulting in a 5th place overall. I missed out a brisket chance, when I messed up one of my recipes, that I thought I would be able to compensate on. I blew it so I just have to “Suck it up Buttercup.”

One of the best things to do at a comp is to sit around and socialize with your fellow competitors (aka BBQ family) on downtime, whether it be under an evening time awning or at a local restaurant.

Congratulations to Jason Singletary at Smoke Central BBQ (Grand Champion) and to Robert and Lex at Smoke Me Silly BBQ Team (Reserve Grand Champion) and every one that had the opportunity to hear their names called. Also, a congratulations to Bad Rooster BBQ on winning the Steak Competition held on Friday night and also a big thank you for helping me with an awning failure on my back porch. Definitely needed the awning during the afternoon sun. Thanks Adam.

Sevierville's Bloomin BBQ Festival is in the books and if you missed it, it was a great event. The organizer (Bob Johanns) and the many volunteers did a fantastic job organizing the event. The weather was great, the forecast for rain held off until after the turn-ins were over. Of course since it was a BBQ comp, the rain came just in time for an outdoor awards presentation.

This was our third comp of the season and things went smoothly and I felt the cook was solid, not great but pretty good. Received a 7th place brisket call and Cindy's Butterfinger pie got a 10th place dessert. Next competition is in Lafayette, GA at the Festival the weekend of June 3rd.

One of the best parts of BBQ is the great people. It's just good to sit around the gather up before the event and after awards and socialize with some great people and meet new folks.

Congratulations to the Grand Champion, our Mississippi friends ( Garrett) and to the Reserve Grand Champions Under the Radar ( Clem). Also congrats to all of those hard working BBQ'rs that received calls and hats off to all the cookers that just make BBQ competition a fun place to be.

Really have to thank for their great products. I normally use the charcoal to get the fire going quickly and clean, then throw the sticks of wood to the firebox through the day. Well I got some wood that just did not burn clean, and I added more charcoal to get the firebox and the ashbed hotter resulting in cleaning up the smoke.

A lot of people chuckle when I say I have a competition coming up and I have NOT practiced nor cooked many comps. Cooking competition in both pro and backyard is a challenge (thus the name competition) and therefore you need to get some smoker time.

Seriously the more you cook, the more you get in a groove, plus you get to tweak your recipes to see what's working and what's not. It's not the best scenario to tweak at a competition, but ya gotta do whatcha gotta do. Normal life goes on and I still enjoy that a lot too.

Anyway, the River Road Grillbillies are prepping and loading for the Bloomin' BBQ Music and Food Festival in Downtown Sevierville. Always a fun time, they put on a great weekend festival open to the public. See their webpage for the itinerary.

The Grillbillies will be prepping Friday and start cooking early Sat morning for the regular KCBS turn-in times from noon until 1:30. Come by and see us. Of course we won't socialize much until after the last turn-in.

We will burning some Charcoal ( Oak Charcoal) and some hickory hardwood all day. Hoping for some great results and some great weather.

Pulled the cook trailer out of storage loaded it up to head to Smoke on the Shores BBQ Championship in Lebanon, TN. Thank the fantastic support team that hosted 80 pro teams and 43 backyard teams over the weekend. Teams and judges from across the country and across the border came in and the weather made it a real challenge. Thanks to all of the volunteers, the staff, and KCBS folks that made this one of the best and largest events in the country.

It's been 6 months since my last competition, and I thought I would shake a little rust off. Cold temperatures and strong winds can impact the smokers as well as the cooks. Obviously needed to shake the rust a little harder. My fuel ( and some hickory wood) burned clean and hot. My smoker ran like a charm. My finished product was what I call mediocre and the judges felt the same. Oh well, gives me some adjustments and tweaks to implement.

Congratulations to Triple H BBQ on the Grand Championship, Local Yokels BBQ for their Reserve GC and all those that had their names called. The rain

Happy to be competing and getting some decent results. Pulled off a 180 for pork. Compliments and thanks to the judges who got to try my pork.

I got the opportunity to talk a bit about BBQ (I never mind talking) and this had the benefit of supporting what the Military Services part of the Helen Ross McNabb Foundation. The Military Services program supports veterans, active-duty military and their families. All proceeds from the Big BBQ Bash will benefit the Military Services program.

Spent the weekend cooking the in Maryville, TN. We were pleased with results, disappointed (Ribs), surprised (Pork). Cook went smoothly which scared me because that's just not normal. It was hot and humid but it could have been worse. We brought home a 3rd place chicken, 1st place Pork (with a 180 score), a 9th place Brisket and 7th place overall. I think I was jinxed on the ribs as I let the Helen Ross McNabb folks film me working on the ribs. https://www.facebook.com/reel/424776862671393

But I did get the pleasure of getting involved with a public service announcement for the McNabb Center's Military Services program. I was asked if I would be willing to be interviewed for a couple of segments for the evening news at WBIR -TV. Certainly a great cause and I was proud to be able to do it. [I am starting to get over my shyness.] You can google it using 2022 Big BBQ Bash WBIR, you will have to watch a commercial first though.

Congratulations to the Grand Champion team of Bad Rooster BBQ (Adam Taunya Dawkins) for capturing their first Grand Championship and to the Smoke Me Silly team of Robert Vanderipe and Lex Vanegas for the Reserve Grand Champion. Congrats to all the teams hearing their names called.

Thanks to the Organizer Mark Smith for a job well done and the Helen Ross McNabb staff and volunteers that worked so hard to pull off a great event.
