FLIGHT CHAMBER 3.0: + 30 % AND GR 2.7
Things we’ve done during Covid · 1

The Covid period has been a trial for most of us on a personal level. Restrictions and travel bans have also lead to significant troubles for a lot of businesses. Indoor skydiving is one branch that’s had tough times – a lot of vertical tunnels have been totally closed, or had limited opening hours.

”We’re better off: Since we’re running the only wingsuit tunnel in the world, there’s all the time been people that are willing to deal with the hassle regarding travels, tests – and even quarantine – to get the chance to come fly with us. We’ve kept the fan running through the whole period.”, says Jonas Tholin, co-founder and CEO at Indoor Wingsuit Stockholm.

The whole period? That’s not entirely true. In April 2020, the tunnel was closed for guests for three weeks.

”We chose to grab the opportunity to do some big improvements that we’ve been wanting to do since we opened back in 2017; but was impossible to do without shutting the tunnel down for a period.”, says Jonas.

”We're coming out of the Corona closure with an innovation bang!”

The biggest accomplish within the upgrade of the facilities is ”Flight Chamber 3.0” – the inlet section, below the Flight Chamber – rebuilt from scratch, comprising enhancements as follows:

– GLIDE RATIO SPAN EXPANDED: 1.6–2.7

– 30 % ”BIGGER” FLIGHT CHAMBER

– 15 % MORE SPEED CAPACITY

The high Glide Ratio option Opens up for flying at really flat angles, enabling efficiency flight training, high GR big suit acro and performance training with big suits.

”We've found flying with Strix/ATC/Freak etc. to be really fun at GR 2.2–2.4, and the tunnel now also provides good/relevant training even for race suits like CR and Alpine.”, says Peter Georén, co-founder and CTO at Indoor Wingsuit Stockholm (and, of course, the master mind behind the improvements).

”Another important upgrade is that we can now change the Glide Ratio quickly. We can fly at low glide one 30 minute session, followed by max glide at the next.”

The new inlet section has radically improved air flow quality – wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. ”Bad flow zones” are history.

”Feeling is the Flight Chamber has become 30 % bigger, as the entire space now has almost perfect flow conditions.”, says Peter

The new, more efficient inlet section, together with various improvements in other parts of the circuit, also means that the top air speed has been increased to 170 km/h; 15 % higher than before.

”Few wingsuit pilots need that speed. But advanced acro flyers can make use of it. However, it’s definitely made tracking suit flying easier and more fun – we can handle bigger pilots and more suit models.”, says Peter.
