DC CRASH ACCUSATIONS

As a former pilot, and old enough to remember firsthand, let me make it crystal clear where the blame rests - on a shortage of ATC (Air Traffic) Controllers. Here's how and why?

In 1981, on August 5th, then Pres. Ronald Reagan fired 11,345 striking ATC Federal Government Employees out of roughly 13,000 - creating a VOID of skilled and experienced workers - that has persisted to this day.

As Pres. Donald Trump postulated yesterday, the crash was not caused by DEI ( Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) or Incompetence.

Perhaps there is ample irony that the former Washington National Airport was renamed the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

It was a sad day then, and now as well.

2025 NATIONAL MASTERS TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS

Announced today by the USAC to be at the Olympic Training Center (formerly 7-11) Velodrome in Colorado Springs, CO - August 6-10, 2025.

This is a 333 meter track (like Trexlertown in PA where I learned to ride) covered by an inflatable roof. It is at elevation 6035 feet (Denver is at 5280 feet).

My initial concern is how can I adapt to the reduced available oxygen at this location.

More details to follow.

2025 TRAINING UPDATE - October 2024

Finishing up October Weight Training. Now punching 4 sets of 4, 60 # Dumbbells with Squats. Also still experimenting with 50 # Kettlebell for Russian Swing exercises.

It's been one step forward, one step back this month. A head cold limited my activity for 2 weeks! Continued daily Glute Bridge and Roller exercises, but less intensity.

Gradual strength improvement from month-to-month is my goal.

Monthly progress posts to follow.

KETTLEBELLS ANYONE?

Credit Menachem Brodie (https://www.humanvortextraining.com/) for convincing me to add a Kettlebell Russian Swing Exercise to my at-home regimen this Fall/Winter.

I've never used a Kettlebell, but will periodically report back its "hinge" strengthening effectiveness.

2025 TRAINING REGIMEN UPDATE

As noted, I began my off-season Weight Training Regimen at my Physical Therapy (PT) Facility - Maria Parham Hospital - in nearby Henderson, NC on Wednesday, September 4th.

Initially 1x per week to start, then 2x weekly with necessary recovery days with stretching and roller riding.

Each PT workout starts with a stationary bike warm-up, followed by stretching, then 4 sets of 5 Squat Lifts with two free dumbbell weights starting at 50 # each, followed by cool-down stretching.

Last year I ended my weight training using 70 # dumbbells. This year I hope to progress to 80 by February 2025.

All stretching focuses upon my legs, hips and core muscle groups. Each workout involves "punching" the squats sets to build "snap" and "power" that will promote faster bike acceleration.

Come February 2025, I will transition from Weight Training to Aerobic Training. More about that later on.

MEDALING AT THE CABIN

Not being one who wears jewelry, I framed my MEDAL for display at the Cabin - appropriately in the Kitchen! It will serve as a daily reminder that I can do better.

On my annual Cardiology Appointment at DUKE next week, I'll present a framed Podium Photo to Dr. Howard Rockman and Dr. Donald Hegland who, along with my entire Medical Team, made this possible.

I've started preparations (Tactics, Strength, Gearing) for 2025 Nationals - back to the PT Gym yesterday for weight training now through January.

ABOUT WISHES, GOALS and DEADLINES

Wishes are not Goals!

They are passive ideas - awaiting arrival - lacking commitment and involvement.

Goals however require active participation and sacrifice.

Both often involve Deadlines to provide satisfaction, focus and motivation, but not always.

For those that have followed my heart attack recovery and competitive cycling Goal journey since March of 2020, you may have noticed, I never mentioned a Deadline!

Why?

Because there was neither a clearly defined path, nor predictable outcome, to achievement. A Deadline for me was useless.

Instead, I established a Golden Rule: Do something each day, no matter how small, that potentially could help me reach my Goals.

By no means did this approach ensure slow, but steady progress. Life got in the way. Many ups and downs. Many twists and turns.

But keeping my eye steadily upon my Lighthouse Goals, somehow I got there - weathering all the storms along the way - trusting in myself and relying upon the help of others.

Perhaps you may find this approach helpful on your journey.

It has served me well.

PLANS FOR 2025 NATIONALS

The balance of August consists of a big dose of rest and a heep of planning activities.

Next year, National's location will require travel on my part - perhaps California? (Not known until 2025 which Velodrome will host the Masters Track Championships). The need for Sponsorship emerges.

What must I do to different to increase the likelihood of taking 3rd Place?

Three areas of improvement have been identified so far:

1) Better Gearing - for my Matched Sprint Elimination Races (See Photo). Track Bikes have Fixed Gears - a Rear Cog (on left) and a Front Chainring (on right). I returned to the Rock Hill Velodrome today (August 28th) to test a 16-tooth cog and 54-tooth Chainring. More testing to follow.

2) Better Tactics. Matched Sprints ARE NOT drag races where the fastest rider is for certain the winner. Most Masters Riders have impressive records of achievement. I do not! Tactics can narrow that gap. My coach Nat will help me improve.

3) Better Acceleration. Getting the "jump" on an opponent often dictates the outcome. My PT Chris will help me improve with weight training to add leg power.
