Hello my flower people! I have exciting news to share with you all….

Coming this spring you will be able to buy Parkridge Petals bouquets at Three Rivers Market!!!

I am so incredibly excited and grateful to get to work with our amazing local co-op to help spread more flower joy in our community. As soon as blooms start popping up and are ready to go I will let y’all know.

Don’t worry, flowers will still be available on Sundays at the farm.

I could not have done this without the support of the amazing Parkridge neighbors, Three Rivers Market, and the greater Knoxville community. Let’s keep growing together and bring more beauty into the world!!!

Did you know that 80% of cut flowers are imported into the country from Columbia? Also, did you know that consumers pay for tariffs not governments? This means that the floral industry in the US is going to see a sharp increase in prices and those flowers you get from a florist or grocery store will cost you more.

What can you do about this?
Support your local flower farms. We grow seasonal and sustainable products that are as fresh as you can get. Florists, we are here to help you, just reach out and choose local. Consumers, buy directly from the source, local farmers markets, and other businesses that support local flower growers.

Can we meet demand solely on American grown flowers?
No, we can’t, but…by supporting your local flower farms you are helping to increase the demand for a domestic product and you are making the US floral industry stronger. This will help more farmers incorporate infrastructure to grow flowers year round and help meet demand.

In 2018 I was so very lucky to visit Monet’s gardens and home in Giverny France. This was at the beginning of my flower growing journey and it is ever imprinted in my mind of what my flower farm goals are….to create a space that embodies magic, joy, whimsy, and overwhelming beauty. Since then I’ve been taking small steps to get there and sometimes it’s hard to see how far I’ve come. Looking back at these photos gives me all the feels again and I know that even with small progress I’m doing it!! Thanks Monet for the continued inspiration.

PS…if you get the chance to go there you must!

It’s always a happy day when all the dahlia tubers are tucked away for the winter!! This year I made some changes to the process and some of it worked and some of it definitely didn’t.

First the positive…cleaning the tubers with an air compressor is a game changer!!! I wasn’t soaking wet covered in mud for hours and hours on end. If you haven’t tried this, I 10/10 recommend but wear safety goggles. Second, despite a growing season plagued with monsoons and then drought and then monsoons and then drought again, I had great tuber production.

Now the bad…despite great tuber production I lost a lot of tubers. Why?!? Well, I wanted to try the dig, leave on the dirt, and store in the basement in bulb crates method to see if this would work and help lighten the load of dividing thousands of tubers all at one time. Well it did not work!!! My basement just doesn’t hold in the humidity for this and the tubers started getting soft and drying out. Worst nightmare!! I had to quickly pivot and get all the tubers cleaned and brought into the house. I salvaged all that I could but I probably lost 1/3 of my stock. Through this I learned that some varieties were fine to do this way, like Caitlyn’s Joy, KA’s™️ Keltie Rose, and Jomanda. But others I lost every tuber of, like Totally Tangerine, Sebastian, and Karma Prospero.

So what does this all mean…my tuber sale will still happen this year probably in early March. Quantities will be limited and tubers might be a little ugly unfortunately. Some of the varieties I had in the sale last year won’t be available due to loss. But I do have some new varieties to share.

So next year I won’t make the same mistakes and try to tweak my process again. This is a journey of learning and figuring out what works best for me. I will find the sweet spot eventually. Until then I can be happy that all the tubers are safely stored now!!

Pictured is KA’s™️Lavender Blush, which is a must grow. It bloomed all season even with our crazy heat and drought, which is rare for a large bloom.

My mom came to visit me this past week and helped me dig all the dahlias. It’s such a huge job and even more daunting when you’ve been sick. Thanks ma for all the help!! Pictured here is Bloomquist Sue that I grow for her name sake but it is also so cheery and a bit wild like her!

Started the big dig yesterday when I started to get a cough and stuffiness. I thought it was my normal sinus issues because I’m allergic to all plants but nope….COVID took me out of the game. I hope I can recommence the dig next weekend when reinforcement arrive aka my mom!!
