Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market Surpasses $200,000 in Vendor Sales, Expanding Access to Fresh Foods in Food Desert

Kokomo, IN – The Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market is thrilled to announce a record-breaking 2024 season, with total vendor sales surpassing $200,000. Of this amount, over $64,000 came from fresh produce and fresh breads, underscoring the market’s fundamental role in improving food access within Kokomo’s designated North-side food desert. On average, more than $2,900 of fresh produce and bread was sold each week, providing essential nutrition to our community.

The market is proud to participate in programs that make healthy, local foods accessible to all. We accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, and through our Double Bucks Program, SNAP-eligible households can double their purchasing power. For every $1 in SNAP benefits spent, participants receive an additional $1 to spend on fresh fruits, vegetables, and other eligible items. This initiative helps ensure that everyone in our community, regardless of income, can access nutritious, fresh foods.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our hardworking vendors, who bring high-quality, handmade goods to the market, and to the Kokomo community, whose support helps strengthen our local economy. By shopping with us, you’re not just buying fresh products—you’re investing in the health and vitality of our community.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible sponsors— Duke Energy, Howard County, Indiana Government, The Kokomo Lantern, and St. Patrick Catholic Church—whose gracious donations made this season truly exceptional. Their support funded 11 non-profits that hosted over 60 events during the market season, provided Little Sprouts educational programs for kids, and supported food security initiatives to bring fresh food to local families.

ATTENTION: PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT!

After much consideration, more than 75 years in business & 3 generations of family customer service to this community, we have decided that this will be our last year in business. The building will be up for sale, but the business is still currently open until further notice. We have enjoyed every year of it and have been very blessed with many many faithful & new customers! THANK YOU COMMUNITY ❤️

We have also employed so many great people that we have grown to cherish as family. Without them, we couldn’t have been so successful & always, hopefully, making everyone’s experience with us feel the same. Like family… Ivan Mooney,grandpa, started the flower shop soon after the depression.
We couldn’t have continued his dream without you all! THANK YOU EMPLOYEES! ❤️

We can’t thank everyone enough for their overwhelming community Support & our dedicated employees over the years. It has been humbling & a pleasure to help you make someone smile or comfort them during sorrow. It’s a very hard & bittersweet decision. It feels like losing another relative or a precious tradition that’s been a big part of our lives. most of my family & lots of employees kids have grown up here! So From the bottom of grandpa, my dads, Rick Mooney & my heart, THANK YOU VERY MUCH EVERYONE! ❤️

10+ hours a day, seven days a week
& even more on holidays just gets hard especially when your family isn’t here to help anymore.. It takes a lot of family & personal time owning a very busy business. Unfortunately Most of our family & some dear friends that have worked here over the years, have passed on as well. Therefore taking away the benefit of family time too. The younger generations have proudly moved on to other dreams of their own so we don’t have any family to carry it on any longer. They see/know the “time” struggles & no matter how much we love something… everything eventually must end.

You can still always order online at www.flowersbyivanandrick.com or you can call 765-513-8594 and leave a message if no answer. You can still come into the shop as well until we permanently close it. I will just be in & out delivering. My employees have been greatly welcomed at other shops! I am also starting to slow down on ordering new items, in order to be able to sell everything and close eventually. I will announce our final good bye when we know when that will be for sure! We just don’t want you to think we are already closed with the for sale sign outside.

We have many wonderful memories to cherish & we wish everyone well! You will all, always be in our hearts & prayers! I know & trust that the other shops in town will welcome you with open arms & take good care of all your needs eventually! We will also be having many ongoing & changing sales to get rid of many things as we clear out years of overstocked items! Hopefully see you soon!
