Skipworth Performing Arts Center

Skipworth Performing Arts Center A historic auditorium / venue located at the Kosciusko Jr. High (formerly the Kosciusko High School.) (See KFEEms.org and click donate.) It was named after W.G.

In January 2019, the doors of the old Junior High Auditorium had been closed for two years due to asbestos. Upon request from the Kosciusko School District, the Kosciusko Foundation for Excellence in Education (KFEE) began, in earnest, raising funds to revitalize, renovate and modernize the 60-year-old historical hall. The doors reopened in 2020, and since then, citizens of Attala County have witn

essed a renaissance in the venue and in its programming. In case you haven’t heard, this wonderful place, located at the top of the hill on East Jefferson, is now The Skipworth Performing Arts Center. Skipworth, who established the High School band in the 1930s. Renovation is now occurring in phases, and although the recital hall itself is near completion, further phased improvements are on the calendar! Stay tuned!

"The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will make its return to Kosciusko on Saturday, Nov. 23, with a captivating performance set for 7 p.m. at the renovated Skipworth Performing Arts Center.

Presented by the Kosciusko Kosciusko Foundation for Excellence in Education (KFEE), the MSO's “Performance Pops” concert promises an engaging evening filled with a variety of classical and contemporary pieces, designed to appeal to music lovers of all ages.

Highlighting the event, longtime Kosciusko High School Band Director Mickey Grove, affectionately known to students as the director of “Big Red” for 19 years, will receive the baton from Maestro Crafton Beck. Grove will conduct the orchestra in “The Liberty Bell March” by John Philip Sousa. To honor Grove’s significant contributions to the community, the Skipworth Center’s lobby will be named in his honor.

Felder Rushing, an 11th-generation American gardener and horticultural educator, will also make a special appearance. Known widely for his syndicated newspaper columns and his NPR program The Gestalt Gardener, Rushing is celebrated for his creative approach to gardening and has lectured worldwide. His passion for horticulture will add a unique touch to the evening, offering attendees insight into his experiences and extensive knowledge.

The Skipworth Performing Arts Center, located at 317 E. Jefferson Street, is part of Kosciusko Junior High School and has undergone significant renovation, transforming from a condemned space into a state-of-the-art facility. The MSO first performed here on Sept. 21 and is excited to return to this acoustically impressive venue for its second engagement.

“The return of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is a testament to the progress our community has made in promoting the arts,” said Dr. Tim Alford, a representative for the Skipworth Center. “This concert will provide Kosciusko residents with a rare opportunity to experience a world-class symphony in a beautifully refurbished setting.”

Tickets are available for $20, with complimentary admission for students under 18 and college students with valid IDs. Tickets can be purchased online at kfeems.org or at the Kosciusko Central School office or KFEE office. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m."
