One of the things I have learned after several years of Pride is to practice aggressive self-care. We are wrapped for face painting today. The crowds usually die down around this time anyway and we’ve been out there since 8 AM. I would like this to be the first year that I don’t go home sick with heat stroke. I hope everyone is hydrating and taking care of themselves and practicing aggressive self-care - not just how they take care of themselves today, but how they care for themselves every day. I was so lucky to give so many great hugs today and I want every one of you to know that I love you and I’m proud of you.

January is Cervical Cancer awareness month. I would be remiss if I didn’t celebrate and speak about the (literally) immortal Henrietta Lacks. Without her I wouldn’t be here. Honestly though, without her a lot of folks wouldn’t be here. The advances made with her cells changed life as we know it. It’s shameful that Henrietta is t a household name and that she and her family have never really been properly compensated for their part in the scientific advances they facilitated. If you aren’t familiar with her story please take some time to read about her and how she changed the world.
Thank you for saving my life, Ms. Lacks.

On Aug. 1, 2023, over 70 years after doctors took Lacks’ cells without her consent or knowledge, her family reached a settlement with biotech company Thermo Fisher.
