Half a century ago, the NCAA opened the door to greater competitive equity in college sports by adopting what is known by many as the Hawaiian Exemption, paving the way for Hawaii-based colleges to compete with mainland schools in spite of their geographic isolation. On December 23, 1982, little-known NAIA-school Chaminade upset top-ranked Virginia, led by three-time MVP Ralph Sampson, 77-72. Call
ed "the greatest upset in college basketball history," the win put host Chaminade on the map nationwide and led to the creation of what was then called the Maui Classic.

Bill was a long-time color and colorful analyst for ESPN’s broadcast of the Maui Invitational. His knowledge and passion for basketball and its fans came out in every broadcast. Bill was a great friend to all of us at the Maui Invitational. He was our “Ohana.” The Tournament will miss the joy he brought to all of us and his love of Maui.
