Half a century ago, the NCAA opened the door to greater competitive equity in college sports by adopting what is known by many as the Hawaiian Exemption, paving the way for Hawaii-based colleges to compete with mainland schools in spite of their geographic isolation. On behalf of KemperSports, KemperSports LIVE, and the Maui Invitational, we extend our deepest condolences to Lori Walton and the entire Walton family on Bill Walton’s passing. Bill was a long-time color and colorful analyst for ESPN’s broadcast of the Maui Invitational. His knowledge and passion for basketball and its fans came out in every broadcast. Bill was a great friend to all of us at the Maui Invitational. He was our “Ohana.” The Tournament will miss the joy he brought to all of us and his love of Maui.
