So since earlier this week the Mohican celebrated her 115th year of sailing on Lake George, we figured it would be good to share this photo of the Mohican back on July 29th, 1947 after she just had her wooden superstructure changed from her 1908 wooden superstructure!

During these days of seemingly endless hate, injustice, bigotry, racism, political unrest, riots and ignorance, we must heed his words now maybe more than ever. We must think instead of instantly react to things and ask ourselves:
Why are these things happening?
Is this right?
Is this true?
Where did these problems come from?
Why do they feel that way?
What would I do if I was in their shoes?
What can I do to make things better?

We must stop hating each and other and making assumptions about one and another based on nothing but political affiliation and skin color.

Today for Fun-Fact Friday we are going to once again touch on how the lake actually controls the temperature AND the winds on the lake during the summer time!

You ever wonder why a breeze off the lake feels nice and cool?
Well this is because the during the summer the lake absorbs the same amount of solar energy as the land, but the land re-radiates energy into the atmosphere, while the lake does not. Therefore, air over land is warmer than that over the water. But this also leads to the winds/lake breezes!

As the land becomes warmer than the water, the warm air over land rises, and gets replaced by the relatively cool air which resides immediately above the lake surface. Lake breezes generally form several hours after sunrise, and have speeds of around10 mph. Lake breezes generally dissipate in the early evening as the sun begins to set. The spring and summer are the most common times of year for lake breezes.

And this is why, during the spring and summer, there are no winds early in the morning and then around 9-10 am a slight breeze starts to blow and it increases into a decent gust by mid-afternoon, but then towards evening/nightfall the winds begin to calm once again and the lake becomes a lot less wavy!

So the next time you are around the lake during the warmer months and you notice a sudden increase of wind then it totally disappears at night, well now you will know why!

Today for Fun-Fact Friday we are going to talk about a little known effect that the lake has in the area.
Two weeks ago, during the big storm we got, it actually rained in Lake George Village, while other towns and higher elevations received 16+ inches of snow...
This is because the lake actually REGULATES the temperature right around the lake!

Lake George fills up a majority of the space in between the mountains, so it really controls the temperature around the immediate edges of the lake and keeps things relatively warm until the lake ices over in the winter.

This effect has been studied on the Great Lakes, but it holds true for our lake as well:
During the summer the lake absorbs the sun's energy and slowly warms up, but in the winter months that energy is gradually released into the atmosphere which makes the air over the water warmer than the air over the land.
This results in cooler springs, warmer falls, delayed frosts and lake-effect snow.

This is why the fall foliage on the backside of the mountains around Lake George turn colors long before the trees on the lake-facing side of the mountain, in the winter (before the lake freezes) the village will get rain (or a lesser amount of snow) while the higher elevations get pounded (like in these photos where the snow line on the mountains sits in a uniform line above the lake!), and it is also why it will be 65 degrees in Warrensburg in early April but it will be 48 degrees right around the lake.

Yesterday's storm left us with barely and inch or two of snow...
But up at the rec center (300' higher in elevation and 1.7 miles away from us) there is roughly 16" of snow!!!
And it looks like higher elevations got even more than that!!
It's crazy what the lake does with the climate around here...
But we will get more into that this upcoming Friday 😉

But how much snow did you get from that storm??
