Don’t just toss your out of focus images; sometimes after the shoot’s craziness is over, having those randomly out of focus shots can be fun. This is actually one of my favorite images and I ALMOST didn’t even bring it into my workflow! I keep every shot I take even the ones that don’t turn out!

PSA to the underwater photographers out there using products! If you use the hashtag you could be their next featured customer! It’s pretty cool when photography equipment manufacturers give their customers a platform to share their work! I’ve been using housings for about 10 years now. As a professional wedding and adventure photographer I need to change camera bodies every couple years to stay up to date; Ikelite provides an affordable way to update my housings at the same time which makes me a HUGE advocate for this company! While I was the latest featured customer I was NOT paid to say this, I’m just a huge fan of their products and customer support! Keep up the awesome work Ikelite!

Not gonna lie this is cool! My images and quotes were just used in 🤩 The article is about none other than the famous and some of my favorite people that make it so great! Underwater photography has always been one of my passions, after 20 years of practice it’s pretty cool to see my work in print! So grateful to for helping me get to where I am in the scuba community!

This sleepy lil guy is a nurse shark. The nurse shark is a common sight in the Caribbean and as docile and cuddly as they can be they are surprisingly on the top 10 list for shark bites! Not due to their aggressive nature but more so because scuba divers and snorkelers often perceive their sleepy behavior incorrectly and try to handle them. SO moral of the story; don’t pick up sharks kids… 🙄

Say hello to my buddy Alpha! …Well he’s not really my buddy… Yet.😃 Alpha is a wolf eel at one of my favorite dive sites. About 9 months ago he was caught by some fisherman when they released him his jaw was broken and could barely feed himself. Wolfies are normally docile creatures. This experience however, left Alpha with an aggression towards humans and it wasn’t uncommon for him to try to chase me off the reef! About a month ago I had noticed Alpha wasn’t home, and on the next dive he still hadn’t returned. Naturally I believe that his injuries from the fishermen finally took its toll on him. BUT last week I was reunited with my buddy and he promptly took a less than playful bite at my camera housing 🤣🤣 Wether he recognizes it yet or not I’m glad to see him again and have an opportunity to build trust with him! Wolfies can live upwards of 20 years so hopefully we have a long relationship!

Engagement sessions are a great way to get comfortable in front of a camera with your partner! It can sometimes feel a little silly at first, but we love to make the poses feel natural and FUN! No awkward portraits when you feel at ease! ☺️

Want to get those interesting shots? Being patient and embracing the fact that you’ll need to do things like stay up till 3am or wake up at 4am is sometimes gonna be key. For the shot above I woke up well before the sunrise (granted I was trying to get a different shot) and watched as the sailboat came into port. Sometimes doing uncomfortable things can produce fantastic opportunities!

Patience.. the only thing you need to get the shot. Luckily it only costs time! What’s wild is how many people came and went using flashlights to light up the falls while I was set to take the image 😂 I’d be halfway through a long exposure and would have to toss it in the trash. Needless to say sometimes you need a second helping of patience! Remember when you’re out there, nature is for everyone even when everyone else is ruining your shots 😂 be patient, be kind, REWIND!

Spring is in full bloom! As are the jellyfish here in Washington state! This is a lion’s mane jellyfish, the largest jellyfish known! It can reach 100+ ft long and have had bell sizes recorded as wide as 7ft! While we don’t typically see them that large here in the Seattle area they can still be quite substantial! They do sting, however they aren’t life threatening to humans soooo keep your distance if you can. I personally believe these jellyfish to have the best aim of any in out waters; they somehow manage to sting me right on my upper lip (one of the only spots not covered while I dive) with some frequency! Although they can sometimes be troublesome I find them to be absolutely stunning!

People often ask me about how to photograph subjects in different situations and environments. Here’s the best advice I can give anyone that applies to almost any situation. GET OUT THERE AND TRY IT! Yes I know. I can already hear the comments coming in “that’s such generic advice”. Yeah it is but it doesn’t make it not true. When I was first getting into photography my dream was to eventually become an underwater photographer and videographer. As you guys have probably noticed I’m posting more underwater images than I used to but let me tell you guys a story about when I first took a DSLR camera underwater.
I had been shooting weddings full time for a few years at this point and decided to buy an housing for my 5Dii. At this point in my life the couple thousand dollar investment was a HUGE gamble. I purchased the housing right before my wife and I went on our honeymoon to Hawaii. As soon as we got there I was so eager to hit the water and try things out. I have NEVER been more discouraged in my photography career as I was after my first dive. I knew NOTHING about underwater photography and it turns out that I sucked at it! 🤣 So there I was in our hotel room going through the images and I had a moment where I needed to decide to either keep trying and figure things out or give up. I decided the only thing I could do was to get out in the water and try new things until I could constantly produce quality images. It’s tough but it’s the only thing that is guaranteed to improve you photography skills. You can watch all the YouTube you want but it won’t help till you get out there and DO IT! I hope this post inspires you guys to get up and get after it!

I get asked where my favorite places to dive are a lot. And the answer is right here in the northwest! Legitimately. I love cold water diving, the experience is so surreal; sure it can be difficult but it makes it that much more satisfying!

Who wants to give this guy a little cuddle?? For all its grumpy looks the wolf eel is a surprisingly friendly creature, while I don’t recommend shoving your hand in their dens to pet them (they do have extremely powerful jaws), they have been known to develop relationships with humans. I personally have seen them come out of their dens to snuggle up with their favorite divers!
